Q1) Two wires AB and CD Suspend a axial stress and strain rigid member BD as shown in fig.

A load of
magnitude 5KN is supported on rigid member BD. If the diameter of wire AB is 8mm and that of wire
CD is 10mm. find the stresses induce in this wire also find elongation of these wires.

Q2) A rigid bar AB carries a load of 100KN and is supported as shown. Calculate the stresses in steel
and bronze road Modulus of elasticity of steel =205KN/MM2 Modulus of elasticity of bronze =
82KN/MM2.

Q3) A circular steel rod of 12mm diameter is tested in testing machine it is found that when
the tension is 16KN the total extension on a 200mm length is 0.14mm and the reduction in
diameter is 0.002mm.Find the value of modulus of elasticity, modulus of rigidity, bulk
modulus and poisons ratio.

Q4) A square bar of 20mm side fixed at both the end is subjected to 300KN load as shown in
fig. Find the reaction at the end and extension of AB. E=200Gpa.
Q5) An aluminum rod is rigidly attached between steel rod and bronze rod. Find the
maximum value of ‘P’ so that stresses in steel, aluminum and bronze (brass) will not exceed
150 MPa ,100 MPa and 1100 MPa respectively. Hence draw axial force diagram.

6) A 50-N load falls through a height of 50 mm onto a steel bar of a diameter of 25 mm and a length
of 400 mm, supported on the ground. If E = 200 GPa. What is the instantaneous stress developed in
the bar and what is the change in its length?

7) a) Find reactions at A and B for load 10kN acting on Bar fixed at both the ends.
b) Draw stress stain curve for mild steel showing all significant points. Define stresses at
these points.
8 A vertical steel bar of 20 mm diameter and 3 meter long is provided with a collar at bottom .What
load can be dropped from a height if 100mm onto the collar if the maximum permissible stress is 165
MPa. Modulus of elasticity of steel =200GPa

load P Newton. Find the elongation of member when same load P applied suddenly.

b) A 100x100x12mm Bar of Tee section is 4m long. An axial load is 180 kN is suddenly applied to it

Power at 200 rpm. The angle of twist over a length of 2m was found to be 0.5 degree. Calculate the

11 A hollow shaft is to transmit 3750kW at 240rpm. If the internal diameter is 0.8times the external
diameter and maximum shear stress developed is limited to 160 N/mm2 Design the Diameter of the
shaft
