TASK 1 Lesson The Line Graph

The line graph shows amounts of electricity produced from four sources in France from 1980 to 2010. Overall, nuclear power became the most common source, producing up to 225 terawatt-hours in 2005, while renewable energy provided the lowest amounts, reaching only 25 terawatt-hours by 2010. In 1980, thermal power generated the most electricity but declined, while nuclear power increased dramatically to become the primary source.

The line graph

Line graphs show numbers changing over a period of time.

(increases – decreases)

Remember: there are 4 parts in our Task 1 essay. They are:

1. Introduction
2. Overview/Summary
3. Details Part 1
4. Details Part 2
How to write a line graph essay?
I will explain that in steps:
1 step – paraphrase the introduction sentence.
Question: The graph below shows electricity production (in
terawatt hours) in France between 1980 and 2010.
Answer: The line graph illustrates how much electricity was
produced using four sources of power (namely nuclear, thermal,
hydroelectric and renewable) in France over a period of 3 decades
(30 years) from 1980 to 2010.
2 step (overview) – 1)write the main increases and decreases
2) what stays unchanged or what becomes most common.
Answer: Overall, it is clear that nuclear power became the most
common means of electricity production, while renewable energy
sources provided the lowest amount of electricity over the period
given.

3 step (details part 1) – write the starting point.

Answer: In 1980, Thermal power generated by far the biggest
amount of electricity at around 120 TW-h. By comparison, the
figures for nuclear and hydroelectric sources stood at roughly the
same number, 75 TW-h. However, renewables produced a
negligible amount of electricity.

4 step (details part 2) – write the ending point.

By 2010, electricity generation from Nuclear power increased
dramatically, reaching a peak of about 225 TW-h in 2005.
Similarly, the amount of electric power provided by renewable
sources rose minimally to approximately 25 TW-h. By contrast,
electricity coming from thermal and hydroelectric power fell
modestly to nearly 50 TW-h.
