Sheet No.2 (Simple Stress)

This document contains 8 problems related to calculating stresses and deformations in mechanical elements like shafts, beams, brackets, and pins. The problems involve determining stresses due to loads like tensile forces, torques, and bending moments. They also involve calculating cross-sectional properties like the neutral axis and diameters required to withstand certain loads based on given yield strengths and factors of safety.

Prof. Dr. Eng. Anwar Kandil

Problem (1)
A tensile member in a machine is subjected to a steady load of 4.5 KN it has a length of 750mm
and is made from steel tube having an outside diameter of 18mm and inside diameter of 12mm
with and E = 207 GPa. Compute the tensile stress in the tube and the axial deformation.
If the tensile member has a solid cross section and is made from mild steel with σy =200MPa.
Calculate the diameter of the member. Take the factor of safety S = 2.

Problem (2)
The Figure shows a shaft - hub
80
connection by a feather key. The shaft
transmits a torque of 300 N.m and has a
diameter d = 50mm.
a- Calculate the surface pressure
between the key and hub.
b- Calculate the shearing stress of the key.

Problem (3)

A beam having a T- section with the dimensions shown in the figure is

subjected to a bending moment of 1600 N.m. the sign of the moment
produces tension at the upper surface of the section.
a- Locate the neutral axis for the given cross section.
b- Calculate the maximum tension and compression bending stresses.

Problem (4) M = 560 N.m

Knowing that the moment shown in the figure acts in the

vertical plane, determine the stresses at points A and B.

Problem (5)

The steel bracket shown in the figure is subjected to a load of 4.5

50
KN, as shown. If the bracket width at fixation is fixation is 50 mm,
and the bracket thickness is 10 mm. Find the stresses acting at the
100
bracket fixation.

Problem (6)
The figure shows a knuckle joint carrying a load F=6000N. Take a =
15 mm, b = 20 mm and d = 15 mm.
a- Calculate the direct shearing stress on the pin.
b- Calculate the surface pressure between the yoke and pin.
c- Calculate the surface pressure between the rod and pin.

Problem (7)
The figure shows a lever keyed to 20 mm round
bar. The lever is loaded by a force F= 1400 N. 150
Which causes torsional and bending moment of
the round bar. 100

a- Calculate the maximum torsional stress on the

round bar.
b- Calculate the maximum bending stress on the F
round bar.
Φ=20 mm

Problem (8)
The figure shows a solid round shaft 500 mm long the shaft is supported by two self-aligning
ball bearings at the ends A, B. The shaft carries v-belt sheave C, which contributes a radial load
of 1800 N to the shaft and gear D, which contributes a radial load of 700 N. The two loads are
the same plane and have the same direction. The shaft is made of steel with yield strength
σy=150 MPa. Take the factor of safety S = 2.
a- Determine the diameter of the shaft.
b- Determine the maximum transverse shearing stress.
