A ratio compares two quantities or numbers. Ratios can be written using a colon (:) or a fraction bar (/). To write a ratio in simplest form, the numerator and denominator are divided by their greatest common factor. Equivalent ratios have the same value when written in simplest form by multiplying or dividing the numerator and denominator by the same number. Ratios can also be made equivalent by using the property of multiplication of means and extremes, where the means (first and third terms) and extremes (second and fourth terms) are multiplied or divided by the same number.

What is ratio? Direction: Answer the following question.

A ratio is a comparison of two different 1. Define ratio in your own words.

2. What are the symbol of ratio?
things or numbers.
Ratio Symbols  a:b a to b
a/b

Direction: Write each ratio in colon form.

We generally express the two 1. 8 roses to 4 chocolates
numbers as a using colon (:) 2. 10 girls to 5 boys

3:4 3. 12 eggs to 1 chicken

4. 5 bananas to 4 grapes
5. 15 bottles to 30 cans

A ratio is also defined as the quotient of the first divided by the second Direction: Write a fraction for the ratio of:
quantity. Therefore, a ratio is also a fraction. 1. 3 Cats to 4 dogs
The ratio of hearts to stars? 2. 18 sunflowers to 5 animals
3/5 3. 17 ducks to 9 cows
The ratio of stars to hearts? 4. 5 houses to 4 trees
5/3 5. 15 kids to 20 adults
Ratios in Simples Form Direction: Identify the following ratios are in simplest form. If not, write
 Simplifying ratios is just the same as simplifying fractions since ratios can also be written as
it in simplest form.
fractions. To reduce ratios in simplest form, divide the numerator and the denominator of
each ratio by their greatest common factor (GCF). Ex. 1. ¾

 Numbers are relatively prime if their greatest common factor (GCF) is 1. Quick questions
 If the numerator and denominator in a given ratio are relatively prime, then  Are the following pairs of numbers relatively prime to each other?
the given ratio is in simplest form.
For example, 15 and 28 are relatively prime because their GCF is 1, while 12 and 18
14 and 21
144 and 25
are not relatively prime because their GCF is 6.

Equivalent Ratios Direction: Find an equivalent ratio.
Equivalent ratios (which are, in effect, equivalent fractions) are two fractions that
express the same relationship between numbers. We can create equivalent ratios by 1. There are 8 boys and 12 girls in a class. What is the ratio of boys
multiplying or dividing both numerator and denominator of a given ratio by the same to girls?
number.
 If the simplest form of two or more ratios are the same or equal, then the ratios are 2. You have a recipe that calls for 2 cups of flour and 3 cups of
equivalent. sugar to make 12 cookies. What is the equivalent ratio of flour to
 To know if two or more ratios are equivalent, you can express them in simple form.
Example sugar in its simplest form?
Tell whether the given ratios are equivalent. 3. A car travel 300 miles in 5 hours. What is the equivalent ratio for
15/60 and 5/20
The simplest forms are both equal to ¼. Therefore, the given ratios are equivalent. miles per hour in its simplest form?

To identify a ratio equal to a given ratio, simply multiply or divide the Direction: Show the given ratios are equivalent by identifying their lowest terms. Write
numerator and denominator of the given ratio by one counting number. NE if the given ratios are not equivalent.
Note that counting numbers do not include zero. 1. 3 , 27

Multiplication of Means and Extremes Direction: Identify the equivalent ratio.

A:b=c:d
Means (a and d) 1. 7:6 = (__):36
Extremes (b and c) 2. 5:6 = 40(__)
Example: Are ratios 3:4 and 9:12 equivalent ratios?
3. (__)35 = 1:7
3:4 = 9:12 4. 6:9 = 42:(__)
3x12 = 9x4
5. (__):8 = 14:28
