Assignment#1 - AM Generation and Detection

This document contains an assignment for a course on analog communication. The assignment includes 8 problems related to amplitude modulation, including generating AM waves using switching and square-law modulation, detecting AM waves using an envelope detector, calculating frequencies and amplitudes of sidebands for several modulated signals, determining modulation indices and sketching modulated waves, and analyzing the frequency spectrum of a signal after square-law demodulation and filtering. The assignment is for section A & B of the 3rd semester course ECC-209 taught by Professor Risheek Kumar.

3rd Semester, Section -A & B

FACULTY NAME: RISHEEK KUMAR
Assignment # 1 – Introduction to Amplitude Modulation, Generation and detection

1. Explain the generation of AM wave using switching modulator with equivalent equation,
waveform and spectrum before and after filtering process.
2. Explain the generation of AM using square-law modulation. Prove that the carrier frequency,
𝑓𝑐 must be at least 3𝑊, where 𝑊 is the bandwidth of the message.
3. Explain the operation of Envelope detector for the demodulation of Conventional AM wave.
4. A modulating signal given by 𝑉𝑚(𝑡) = 2 sin(2𝜋 ∗ 500 𝑡) amplitude modulates a carrier given
by 𝑉𝑐(𝑡) = 10 sin(2𝜋 ∗ 106 𝑡). Assume modulation index is 0.5
a. Frequencies present in the modulated signal,
b. Amplitude of each side band.
c. Bandwidth required.
d. Total transmitted power to a load of 100Ω.
5. A standard AM transmission sinusoidally modulated to a depth of 30% produces
sideband frequencies of 4.928 MHz and 4.914 MHz The amplitude of each
sideband frequency is 75 volts. Determine the amplitude and frequency
of the carrier.
6. Consider the message signal 𝑚(𝑡) = 20𝑐𝑜𝑠(2𝜋𝑡) volts and the carrier wave 𝑐(𝑡) =
50𝑐𝑜𝑠(100𝜋𝑡) volt. (i) Determine the resulting AM wave for 75% modulation (ii) Find the
power developed across a load of 100Ω due to this AM.

7. Using the message signal 𝑚(𝑡) = , determine and sketch the modulated wave for
1+𝑡2
amplitude modulation whose percentage of modulation equals the following values
a) 50%
b) 100%
c) 125%
2𝜋
8. An AM signal 𝑆(𝑡) = [1 + 0.2cos( 𝑓 𝑡)]cos(2𝜋𝑓 𝑡) is detected using a square law
3 𝑚 𝑐
demodulator. This square law modulator has a characteristics 𝑣0(𝑡) = [𝑆(𝑡) + 2]2. The
output is then filtered by an ideal LPF with a cut-off frequency at 𝑓𝑚 Hz. Obtain the
frequency spectrum of the demodulated signal. Also plot the frequency spectrum within the
frequency range −𝑓𝑚 ≤ 𝑓 ≤ 𝑓𝑚. [Take 𝑓𝑐 ≫ 𝑓𝑚]
