Math Script

The document summarizes using various polynomial factorization methods like remainder theorem, synthetic division, and finding x-intercepts and y-intercepts on two polynomial equations. The first polynomial is y = x^3 - 7x - 6 and factors into (x - 1)(x + 2)(x + 3). The second is y = x^3 - 9x + 2x^2 - 18 and factors into (x - 2)(x - 3)(x + 3). The x-intercepts and y-intercepts are found for both polynomials.

Number 1

Atim

The first polynomial equation is

Y is equal to x cube minus 7 x minus 6

Then change y to 0

0 is equal to x cube minus 7 x minus 6

Next is find its factors

The factor we’re going to use is x plus 1

Sandra

Next is we're going to use remainder theorem

we’re going to make x + 1 into x is equal to -1 by moving the number on the right

Substitute the x in polynomial into - 1

Next is simplify the polynomial

Negative 1 raised to 3 is equal to negative 1

Negative 7 times negative 1 is equal to positive 7

Then bring down negative six

Next is negative 1 + negative six is equal to negative 7

Then negative 7+ 7 is equal to 0

Rolen

Next is we're going to use synthetic division

In using synthetic division, make sure the polynomial is written in standard form. So we’re going to add x
squared to our polynomial so that we can use synthetic division.

Our polynomial now is x cube + x squared – 7 x – 6 amd our divisor is negative 1

First is get the leading coefficients in polynomial

1 0 -7 -6

Next is bring down 1

Multiply leading coefficient to divisor then put the result into the next column then add the terms

1 times -1 is equal to -1

0 + -1 =-1

-1 times -1 = positive 1

-7 + 1 = -6

-6 times -1 = positive 6

-6 + 6 = 0

The final value on the right is the remainder. Working right to left, -6 is your constant, next is -1 for x
then -6 for x squared

Last is find its factors

(X – 3) and (x+2)

Kate

Our x intercepts are -1, 3, -2

To find y intercept

X=0

Substitute x into 0 then simplify

0 raised to 3 = 0

-7 times 0 =0

Bring down -6

Our y intercept is -6
Atim

The second polynomial equation is

Y is equal to x cube minus 9 x + 2 x squared minus 18

Then change y to 0

0 is equal to x cube minus 9 x + 2 x squared minus 18

Next is find its factors

The factor we’re going to use is x plus 2

Sandra

Next is we're going to use remainder theorem

we’re going to make x + 2 into x is equal to -2 by moving the number on the right

Substitute the x in polynomial into - 2

Next is simplify the polynomial

Negative 2 raised to 3 is equal to negative 8

Negative 9 times negative 2 is equal to positive 18

Negative 2 squared is equal to positive 4 times 2 is equal to 8

Then bring down negative 18

Negative 8 + 18 + 8 minus 18 = 0

Rolen

Next is we're going to use synthetic division

We need to fix our polynomial in standard form

Our polynomial now is x cube + 2 x squared minus 9 x minus 18

First is get the leading coefficients in polynomial

1 2 -9 -18

Next is bring down 1

Multiply leading coefficient to divisor then put the result into the next column then add the terms

1 times -1 is equal to -2

2 + negative 2 = 0

0 times negative 2 = 0
Negative 9 + 0 = negative 9

Negative 9 times negative 2 = positive 18

Negative 18 plus 18 = 0

The final value on the right is the remainder. Working right to left, -9 is your constant, 1 is x squared

Last is find its factors

(X – 3) and (x+3)

Kate

Our x intercepts are -2, 3 , -3

To find y intercept

X=0

Substitute x into 0 then simplify

0 raised to 3 = 0

-9 times 0 =0

0 raised to 2 = 0 times 2 0

Bring down -18

Our y intercept is -18
