Setting up Authenticator browser extension for Multi Factor

Authentication (MFA)

1. Launch the Google Chrome web browser.


2. Open a new tab by clicking on the '+' icon located at the top of the browser window.

3. In the address bar, enter the following web address: https://authenticator.cc, and then press the
Enter/Return key to navigate to the webpage.

4. Click 'Add to Chrome' on the Authenticator Browser Extension Homepage. You will then be
redirected to the Chrome Web Store.

5. Click the ‘Add to Chrome’ button located to the right of the Authenticator extension’s title in the
Chrome Web Store.

6. Click 'Add extension' in the popup to confirm adding the Authenticator extension to Google
Chrome.

7. After adding the Authenticator extension to Google Chrome, you will be redirected to the
extension's documentation page.

Note: The 'Chrome Issues' notice is a reminder not to reinstall the extension to resolve any issues
encountered while using it. Doing so will result in the loss of all data stored within the Authenticator
extension.

8. To pin the Authenticator extension for ease of access in the future, click the ‘extension’ button
located to the right of the address bar, and then click the ‘pin’ button (for the Authenticator
extension) within the expanded interface.

9. Access the Authenticator extension by clicking the pinned button.

Add a QR Code for MFA to the Authenticator Extension

The following steps outline how to use the Authenticator browser extension as the multi factor
authentication application for your Microsoft 365 account in lieu of using the official Microsoft
Authenticator application on your mobile device.

Note: You must initiate the process of adding MFA to your Microsoft 365 account before proceeding with
the steps below.

1. Sign into Microsoft 365 with your work or school account with your password like you normally
do. After you choose ‘Sign in’ (Figure 9) and successfully sign in, you'll be prompted for more
information.

2. Click ‘Next’ when prompted for more information.

3. When prompted to set up multi factor authentication using the Microsoft Authenticator mobile
application, click ‘I want to use a different authenticator app’.

4. Click ‘Next’ to proceed, and the QR code for enabling MFA on your Microsoft 365 account will
appear.

5. Scan the QR Code with the Authenticator extension using the following steps:
i. Click the pinned Authenticator extension button to open the extension's interface
menu.
ii. Click the ‘scan QR code’ button.
iii. Carefully click and drag to draw a square that completely covers the QR code to scan it.

Note: After clicking the 'scan QR code' button, a demonstration will follow. Pay close attention to it.

6. A popup window will appear once the scan is successful, click the ‘OK’ button to close the
popup.

7. Ensure an entry has been made in the Authenticator extension’s interface and click ‘Next’ to
proceed.

8. Turn on the Copy to clipboard feature for the Authenticator extension by following the steps
below:
i. Click the pinned Authenticator extension button to the extension’s interface.
ii. Click anywhere on the 6-digit code of the available entry.
iii. Click ‘Allow’ on the popup window that asks you if you wish to allow or deny the ability
for the Authenticator extension to copy and paste.

9. Follow the steps below to complete the MFA verification process:
i. Click on the pinned Authenticator extension button to open the extension’s interface.
ii. Click anywhere on the 6-digit code to copy it to your clipboard. ‘Copied’ appears below
the entry in the Authenticator extension interface. If you do not see ‘Copied’, the copy
to clipboard feature was not successfully set up. See Step 8 for instructions on how to
enable the feature.

iii. Click on the input field for the 6-digit code and paste the code that was copied to your
clipboard during Step 9.ii.

iv. Click ‘Next’.

Note: The 6-digit number is your current one-time password and the circle at bottom right corner tells
you how much time is left for the current password. When the timer for the code expires, it is no longer
valid.
10. Once the verification process was a success you will be greeted by an interface stating as much.
This indicates that you have successfully set up MFA for your Microsoft 365 account using the
Authenticator extension. Click ‘Done’ to complete the process.

Manually add an entry for MFA to the Authenticator Extension

The following steps outline how to use the Authenticator browser extension as the multi factor
authentication application for your Microsoft 365 account in lieu of using the official Microsoft
Authenticator application on your mobile device.

Note: You must initiate the process of adding MFA to your Microsoft 365 account before proceeding with
the steps below.

1. Sign into Microsoft 365 with your work or school account with your password like you normally
do. After you choose ‘Sign in’ (Figure 9 Signing into Microsoft 365 AccountFigure 9) and
successfully sign in, you'll be prompted for more information.

2. Click ‘Next’ when prompted for more information.

3. When prompted to set up multi factor authentication using the Microsoft Authenticator mobile
application, click ‘I want to use a different authenticator app’.

4. Click ‘Next’ to proceed, and the QR code for enabling MFA on your Microsoft 365 account will
appear.

5. Click the ‘Can’t scan image?’ button. Two fields, ‘Account name’ and ‘Secret key’, and their
respective values will be revealed. Take note of both values, they are required in the following
steps.

6. Follow the steps below to navigate to the form to manually add an entry to the Authenticator
extension after opening the extension’s interface using the pinned button:
i. Click the pencil button.
ii. Click the ‘+’ button.
iii. Click ‘Manual Entry’.
iv. Enter the value for account name in the ‘Issuer’ input field.
v. Enter the value for secret key in the ‘Secret’ input field.
vi. Click ‘OK’.

7. Ensure an entry has been made in the Authenticator extension’s interface and click ‘Next’ to
proceed.

8. Turn on the Copy to clipboard feature for the Authenticator extension by following the steps
below:
i. Click the pinned Authenticator extension button to the extension’s interface.
ii. Click anywhere on the 6-digit code of the available entry.
iii. Click allow on the popup window that asks you if you wish to allow or deny the ability
for the Authenticator extension to copy and paste.

9. Follow the steps below to complete the MFA verification process:
i. Click on the pinned Authenticator extension button to open the extension’s interface.
ii. Click anywhere on the 6-digit code to copy it to your clipboard. ‘Copied’ appears below
the entry in the Authenticator extension interface. If you do not see ‘Copied’, the copy
to clipboard feature was not successfully set up. See Step 8 for instructions on how to
enable the feature.

iii. Click on the input field for the 6-digit code and paste the code that was copied to your
clipboard during Step 9.ii.

iv. Click ‘Next’.
