POST TITLE: OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT GRADUATE

RESPONSIBLE TO: HEAD OF OPERATIONS OR DESIGNATED DEPUTY

OVERALL OBJECTIVES OF POST

Working closely with Operational Management Team you will gain a detailed understanding of the
Port’s various operational areas and will assist with reviewing, identifying and recommending
improvements in planning, organisation and day to day management of all aspects of operations

KEY TASKS

➢ Gain an understanding of all of the port’s various operational areas, including the Port’s
customers and key stakeholders;
➢ Develop knowledge of the operational business plans together with an appreciation of
budgets and forecasts to ensure expenditure is in line with financial protocols;
➢ Review operational processes, procedures and working practices and identify potential
efficiency improvements;
➢ Facilitate the scoping, development and delivery of business improvement projects to assist
in the delivery of the Tyne 2050 strategy;
➢ Assist with the receipt, despatch, stocking and redelivery of cargo into and from all storage
areas;
➢ Assist with the planning and allocation of daily and weekly labour in accordance with the
current skill base to meet customer requirements and workload;
➢ Support the efficient use of operational resources and establish and report on operational
key performance indicators (KPI’s) and initiatives to improve operational efficiency in the
business;
➢ Facilitate the management of employees, agency staff and contractors in accordance with
the Port’s policies and procedures;
➢ Ensure compliance with relevant safe systems of work, risk assessments and health and
safety and environmental procedures including reporting of any incidents or near misses;
➢ Participate in operational and health & safety meetings where required;
➢ Establish responsible deadlines and personal work plans and manage time effectively;
➢ Build effective relationships with colleagues from around the business to solve a variety of
challenges and assist in implementing cultural change.

The above list is not exhaustive and other duties may be attached to the post from time to time.
Variations may also occur to the duties and responsibilities without changing the general character
of the post.

The following are standard responsibilities for all positions within the Port:

1. Participate in any review / performance management process involving the identification of


training needs for self and others.
2. Take appropriate responsibility to ensure the health and safety of self and others.
3. Undertake any other tasks and responsibilities appropriate to the level of the post.
