1 The Coordinate Plane

◼ Objectives:
◼ 1) Plotting Points
◼ 2) Distance Formula
◼ 3) Mid point Formula
Plotting Points in the Cartesian Coordinate System:‫االحداثيات الكارتيزية‬
Plot: We move from the origin and plot points in the following way:

where we find the corresponding ordered pairs of real numbers
(x,y).

The ordered Pairs (a,b) and (c,d) are equal

If and only if
a=c and b=d

For instance, if ( x,4) = (−2, y ), then x = −2 and y = 4

Distance Between Two Points
Using the Pythagorean Theorem, we can find the distance between
two points P1(x1 , y1) and P2(x2 , y2) in the Cartesian coordinate
system.
y
P2(x2 , y2)
y2
Thus we can find the distance d by the

| y2 – y1 |
Pythagorean Theorem.
y1
d = x2 − x1 + y2 − y1
2 2 2 P1(x1 , y1) (x2 , y1) x
| x2 – x1 |
x1 x2
d= x2 − x1 + y2 − y1
2 2

d= ( x2 − x1 )2 + ( y2 − y1 )2 .

The Distance Formula d = ( x2 − x1 ) + ( y2 − y1 ) .

The Midpoint Formula
The Midpoint M of the line segment from P1 ( x1 , y1 ) to P2 ( x2 , y2 )
Is given by:  x1 + x2 y1 + y2 
M=  , 
