Indoctrination Training HAZMAT

The document discusses hazardous materials (HAZMAT) and dangerous goods, which are substances that pose health, safety or environmental risks during transportation. It describes the nine classes into which HAZMAT and dangerous goods are divided according to their characteristics, such as explosives, flammable gases and liquids, oxidizers, poisons, and corrosives. HAZMAT refers only to health effects of substances, while dangerous goods classification considers additional physical hazards like fire and explosion that can damage property, the environment or people. The purpose of the classification system is to properly identify substance risks to safely transport and handle hazardous materials.

What is HAZMAT
HAZMAT is an abbreviation for “hazardous
materials”—substances in quantities or
forms that may pose a reasonable risk to
health, property, or the environment.
HAZMATs include such substances as toxic
chemicals, fuels, nuclear waste products, and
biological, chemical, and radiological agents.
DANGEROUS GOODS
Dangerous goods, abbreviated DG, are
substances that when transported are a risk to
health, safety, property or the environment.
Certain dangerous goods that pose risks even
when not being transported are known as
hazardous materials. Hazardous materials are
often subject to chemical regulations.

HAZMAT CLASSES
CLASS 1 – Explosives

Class 1 dangerous goods and why are they

classed as dangerous? Class 1 goods are
products that possess the ability to alight or
detonate as a consequence of a chemical
reaction. Explosives are classified as a
hazardous product for a pretty clear reason –
they can explode.

CLASS 2 – Gasses
The HAZMAT Class 2 in United States law
includes all gases which are compressed and
stored for transportation. Class 2 has three
divisions: Flammable, Non-Flammable/Non-
Poisonous, and Poisonous. This classification
is based on the United Nations'
Recommendations on the Transport of
Dangerous Goods - Model Regulations.

Combustible Liquid

Class 3 dangerous goods are flammable

liquids with flash points no more than 60
celcius degrees. It covers liquid
substances, molten solid substances with
a flash point above 60 celcius degrees and
liquid desensitized explosives.

that are easily ignited and
readily combustible (nitrocellulose,

Organic substances which contain the

bivalent -O-O- structure and may be
considered derivatives of
hydrogen peroxide, where one or both
of the hydrogen atoms have been
replaced by organic radicals.

HAZMAT & DG
What's the difference between hazmat
and dangerous goods?
• Hazardous substances are
classified based only on health
effects (whether they are immediate
or long term),
• Dangerous goods are classified
according to their immediate
physical or chemical effects, such as
fire, explosion, corrosion and
poisoning, affecting property, the
environment or people.
