Unit 6: Statistics . 4 (5 hours) 6.1 Measure of dispersion (Standard deviation and coefficient of variation) 6.2. Normal distribution Chapter Statistics 6.1 Standard Deviation ‘The standard deviation is defined as the positive square root of the arithmetic mean of the squares of the deviations of the given observations from their arithmetic mean. It is denoted by Greek alphabet sigma (0). 4) Individual Series Fist ES emma o FE where, d= x— A (Short cut method) b) Discrete and Continuous Series + [ist om FE (EY are d= XA (Sot cut etd) In continuous series x is mid-value of the class interval. Coefficient of Variation ‘The relative measure of dispersion based on standard deviation is defined as, the ratio of standard deviation and the arithmetic mean is called coefficient of standard deviation. (148 .-Applied Mathematieg ‘: Coefficient of standard deviation =" When the coefficient of standard deviation is expressed in percentage ig called coefficient of variation and itis denoted by C.V. and is defined by a Coefficient of variation (C.V.) => X 100% A distribution with les the coefficient of variation (C.V.) more will be the ‘unifomity (or consistency of homogeneity). A distribution with greater Cv, is said to be more variable of less consistent. Variance ‘The square of the standard deviation is called variance.
