EXPERIMENT NO 3

OBJECTIVE To Create geometry of plate for finite element analysis(FEA) using ANSYS
workbench.
MATERIAL REQUIRED ANSYS Workbench
THEORY AND PROCEDURE
STEP 1 Overview
• This workshop assumes little or no prior experience of SpaceClaim. Basic principles will be
demonstrated through the creation of a simple plate pair.
Completion of this workshop involves:
• Launching Workbench
• Starting SpaceClaim
• Creating sketches
• Creating 3D geometry
• Saving the project

STEP 2 Planning
Before starting its a good idea to think about how the geometry can be defined in terms of
sketches and modeling operations.
▪ Sketches are 2D entities. 3D Geometry is created by applying modeling
operations to the sketches.
• This basic geometry can be defined by a single
rectangular sketch that is rounded at the two ends.
• The sketch can then be extruded to create the
thickness.
• Holes need to be added along the boundary.
• This plate can then be copied at a distance of 55 mm.
STEP 3 Project Start-Up
Start Workbench and Spaceclaim
A. Start All Programs ANSYS 16.0 Workbench
16.0
B. Expand Component Systems and drag and drop a Geometry component system into the
Project
Schematic.
C. Right-click on the Geometry cell (A2) and click on New SpaceClaim Geometry... to
launch SpaceClaim
▪ SpaceClaim may take up to a minute to launch depending on the machine configuration. The
info bar on the bottom left corner of the Workbench window will display the message
indicating that SpaceClaim is launching.
STEP 4 Set Units
Set Units as Millimeters
A. Go to File SpaceClaim Options
B. Go to Units tab, then make sure ‘Units setting
for:’ is set to ‘This Document’. Then for Type
select Metric from the drop-down box. This will
set the Length unit to Millimeters.

STEP 5
1st Sketch Creation
Create the first sketch on the XY Plane
A. Note the currently active plane on which the grid is visible.
By default it is XZ plane.
▪ (This default plane can be changed in Spaceclaim Options > Advanced > Top View
Direction)
B. To select the XY plane, click on the Select New Sketch Plane button at the bottom of the
graphics panel and move your mouse between positive X and Y axes, and click once.
C. Now the grid is displayed on the XY Plane.
STEP 6
1st Sketch Creation
Create the first sketch on the XY Plane continued...
A. Now click on Plan View to orient the XY plane to be normal to the screen
B. Click on Rectangle tool, or use the keyboard shortcut ‘R’ to start drawing a rectangle.
▪ Note that when you hover the mouse over a tool, a information box appearsthat shows the
name of the tool, followed by the Shortcut for the tool in brackets, and a short description.
You can press F1 at this stage to directly jump to the Help section for that tool.
▪ Also note that the Sketch Mode is currently active. The mode below it is the Section Mode.

STEP 6 1st Sketch Creation
Create the first sketch on the XY Plane continued
A. Move the mouse to the origin of the plane (a plus sign will ... track the cursor, and a green
dot will appear at the origin to indicate proximity). Click on the origin and drag the mouse
outward from the origin. A rectangle is drawn that changes size as per the mouse movement.
B. Press Spacebar key on the keyboard so you can enter a dimension for the length and width
of the rectangle. Enter a value of 100 for the length. The units are automatically appended.
Press Tab key on the keyboard to switch to the width dimension and enter 60.

1
STEP 7 1st Sketch Creation
Create the first sketch on the XY Plane
A. Click on Sweep Arc tool
B. Draw the arc on one of the short edges
I. Move the mouse to the center of one of the shorter edges of the rectangle (a triangle sign
will appear
indicating the center). Click to set the arc’s center.

II. Move the mouse to one end of the edge, click to set the starting point of the arc.
Then move the mouse to the other end of the edge and click to complete the 180
0 arc.
C. Repeat the arc on the other short Edge

STEP 8 Create 1st Plate

Create the first plate using the first sketch
A. Switch to 3D Mode. Note that the sketch is now automatically converted to a surface. The
structure
tree on the left panel shows the surface.
▪ Tip: Switch to isometric view to get a better view and prepare for the next operation.
B. Click on the Pull tool. Click on the rectangularsurface on the XY plane to select it. Press
and hold
Ctrl button and click on the two semi-circular endsto select all three faces. Click and Drag the
mouse cursor in the positive Z-direction to start extruding. The depth of the extrude changes
with the mouse
movement.
C. Press Spacebar key on the keyboard so you canenter a dimension for the depth. Enter a
value of 5.
.

STEP 9 Create Holes on the Plate

Create the first circular imprint
A. Select the top surface of the plate and switch to Sketch Mode
B. Pick the Circle tool and follow these steps to create the circle:
I. Move the mouse to one of the intersection between the straight edge and the arc and press
and release ‘Shift’ key on the keyboard.
II. Move the mouse inwards by 5 mm and click to locate the center of the circle.
Move the mouse outwards and press ‘Spacebar’ key and enter 5 mm as the diameter of the
circle and
press enter to complete the circle.
C. Switch to 3D Mode to see that the new circle appears as a circular imprint on the surface.
STEP 10 Create Holes on the Plate
Create copies in a circular Pattern
A. Click on Circular Pattern tool
B. Follow these steps to create 4 circular surfaces on the curved side:
I. Click on the first icon from the top in the Tool guide. Then click on the small circular face.
I. Click on the second icon from icon from the top in the Tool guide. Then click on the axis at
the center of the curved plate face.

▪ Tip: If the axis is not visible, move mouse over to the curved
face of the plate, so that it gets highlighted. The axis will
become visible at that point.
III. Check options panel in the left and enter 4 for ‘Circular Count’ and 180 for ‘Angle’. You
will see an image of the prospective locations of the circular faces. You may need to click on
one of the arrows to pick the correct direction for pattern.
