AS Science 10 - Lesson3 - Effect of EM Waves

This document discusses the effects of electromagnetic radiation on living things and the environment. While some forms of EM radiation are essential, they can also be harmful in excessive amounts. When radiation pollution occurs, it can contaminate air, soil, and water, working its way up the food chain and potentially affecting all life. The document contains activities assessing safe and unsafe practices with EM waves, identifying facts and fiction about radiation, and explaining the negative effects of different types of EM radiation on organisms and the environment when exposed in large amounts.

Effects of Electromagnetic (EM) radiation on living things and the

environment

Introduction
From the practical applications of EM waves discussed last week, we can
conclude that these waves are significant to us. But, even essential forms of
radiations can be harmful in excessive amount.
When handled improperly, radioactive pollution may occur, where the air, soil
and water will be contaminated. This pollution may eventually make its way up to the
food chain where all forms of life may be affected.
Activity 1: EM Wave Safety

Direction: Observe the following scenarios. Put () if it shows a safe practice in handling EM waves and (x) m

____1. Dr. Martinez advises his patients to only have X-ray check up once a year and
only when needed.
____2. Before going out, Sandy prepares her umbrella and applies sunscreen
protection lotion with SPF 30 on her face and body.
____3. A nuclear power plant is built near residential areas and schools.
____4. Health care professionals should always wear gloves and EMR safety shielding
dress using radiation equipment.
____5. Nathan uses his mobile phone for 8 hours every day in playing games.

ACTIVITY 2. Fact or Fiction

Read each statement. Mark √ “Fact” or “Fiction” for each statement depending on

what you think or believe to be correct.

Fact Fiction 1. If you are exposed to radiation you will develop cancer.

Fact Fiction 2. You should keep track of the number of medical x-rays and scans

you have received.

Fact Fiction 3. Most radiation that we are exposed to is man-made.

Fact Fiction 4. Exposing food to radiation makes it radioactive.

Fact Fiction 5. Radiation can be beneficial or harmful.

Fact Fiction 6. Children are more sensitive to radiation than adults.

Fact Fiction 7.All glow-in-the-dark items contain radioactive sources.

Fact Fiction 8.Gamma ray high doses can kill living cells. Lower doses can cause
cancer in cells.

Fact Fiction 9.Radiation from a tanning bed is more harmful than radiation from

the sun.

Fact Fiction 10.Cigarettes are a source of radiation exposure.

ACTIVITY 3: Explain it to me
Directions: Write the negative effects of the given EM waves on living things and the
environment when exposed in large amounts. Do it on a separate sheet
of paper.
