Track Guide - Teretonga

Teretonga Park is a racetrack located in New Zealand that is similar in lap times to Pukekohe Park. It features high-speed straights and corners, including a high-speed left-hand turn at the end of the main straight. The track then has a series of corners requiring late braking and smooth transitions between turns. Section three contains a braking zone before a medium speed right-left combination. The final corner is another critical area, as drivers must exit quickly to maximize speed down the main straight. Proper braking points and smooth lines through all corners are needed to achieve fast lap times at Teretonga Park.

TERETONGA IS ANOTHER HIGHLIGHT OF THE NEW ZEALAND MOTOR

TERETONGA // SECTION 1
RACING SEASON FOR MOST DRIVERS, WITH LAP TIMES VERY SIMILAR
TO PUKEKOHE. BOTH TRACKS HAVE AN ASSORTMENT OF HIGH-SPEED
STRAIGHTS, FAST CORNERS AND ONE SLOW HAIRPIN.

Heading down the main straight at Teretonga toward the infamous high-speed left-
hander, the track elevates very slightly. You need to find a good braking point but
with a slight camber on the initial turn-in, trail braking in to turn one is possible.

Try to make the initial turn-in as smooth as possible as any further need to
decelerate or unnecessary scrubbing of speed will be costly on exit.

Turn the car in early, keeping the car one metre from the pole line around the
entire corner, whilst trying to maintain full throttle. Keep close to the kerbing, which
is part the way round the corner on the left and keep your eyes up looking for the
exit on the right-hand side of the corner. Gently unwind the steering, looking for the
ripple strip on the outside edge. It is OK to touch it but try and avoid running over
it as the exit of this corner is at very high-speed.

CAUTION // Avoid running wide of the ripple strip on exit, as the exit
speed is very high in most cars.

Section two is really a series of corners. Approach the corner on the left-hand side,

TERETONGA // SECTION 2
brake quite late, one car width from the outside edge. Turn in to a late apex and
accelerate hard. Keep to the right-hand side and try to straight line the next
left-hander. It is better to sacrifice a little bit of speed on the first right-hander,
but is important to gain maximum speed through the next series of corners.

Pick up a late apex on the left-hander – staying to the left-hand side of the track.
You may need to dab the brakes to induce a bit of weight transfer for the next fast
right hander.

Approaching turn three you should be mid-track or to the right. You will need

TERETONGA // SECTION 3
to brake the car in a straight line. Braking begins just after the kink, by which
stage the car should be straight. Simply brake firmly; trail braking is possible and
occasionally used.

Turn three is a pretty straight forward corner with the apex ½ the way round
the bend.

Some clip the apex kerbing, but there is little to be gained by crashing over it.

Use all the road at the exit, being careful not to run over the ripple strip on the
outside. It is OK to touch but be careful not to drive over it, as it will result in
wheel-spin.

There is a small left-hand kink as you head towards the sharp left-hander. It is
important to run very close to the inside grass or kerb and you may even touch
the inside kerb. This makes it a good reference point that you are in-fact driving a
straight line heading toward turn four.

CAUTION // Deep puddles form on the inside ripple strip, so keep a safe
distance away in very wet conditions.

The last corner of Teretonga is once again a critical part of the lap as it determines

TERETONGA // SECTION 4
the speed down the main straight. Find a brake point by using braking marker
boards, but you want to arrive at turn four on the right-hand side of the race track.

Slow the car down, turn in. It is OK to touch the inner ripple strip, but not to hard
as this may unbalance the car and we are looking for good exit speed. Unwind the
steering with progressive power, running to the right-hand exit. Keep off the large
outside ripple strip as this will definitely upset the balance and affect exit speed.

Note: The driver should take a long hard look at their technique and style as to
whether the exit has been optimised.

You are now heading down the main straight – although there are no more corners,
keep concentration up as fast gear changes will have an affect on overall lap time.
One missed gear on the straight may spoil what may have been an overall good lap.

If you are driving a single-seater or light hybrid style race car, keep to the left-hand
side of the main straight. The pit wall will act as a buffer and stop the notoriously
strong cross-winds.
