1 a) Why should the rotor of a 3-phase induction motor rotate in the [2M] CO1 L1
same direction as that of its rotating magnetic field?
b How the speed of induction motor is controlled by variable - [2M] CO1 L1
) frequency?
c) Write the types of rotors used in synchronous generators. Where [2M] CO1 L1
are they used?
d How can the load sharing between the alternators operating in [2M] CO1 L1
) parallel be changed?
e) What is meant by over-excitation with reference to synchronous [2M] CO1 L1
motor?

UNIT-1
2 a) What are the various losses occurred in 3-phase induction motor [5M] CO L1
and also represent power flow diagram? 1
b A 3-phase, 50 Hz induction motor is wound for 8-poles. [5M] CO L3
) Calculate: (i) The synchronous speed. (ii) The rotor speed when 2
slip is 3%. (iii) Rotor frequency when rotor runs at 800 rpm.

3 a) Draw the torque–slip characteristics of an induction motor and [5M] CO L2
explain in detail. 1
b With the help of diagram, explain the operating characteristics of [5M] CO L2

4 a) Explain in detail about V/f control method for speed control of 3- [5M] CO L2
phase induction motor. 1
b The rotor resistance and stand still reactance of a 3-phase [5M] CO L3
) induction motor are 0.02 Ω / phase and 0.1 Ω / phase respectively. 2
At normal voltage, the full-load slip is 3%. Estimate the
percentage reduction in stator voltage to develop full-load torque
at half full-load speed. Also calculate the power factor.

6 a) Derive the expression for induced EMF in synchronous generator? [5M] CO L1

b The stator of a three-phase, 8-pole synchronous generator driven [5M] CO L3
) at 750 rpm has 72 slots. The winding has been made with 36 coils 3
having 10 turns per coil. Calculate the rms value of the induced
emf per phase if the flux per pole is 0.15 Wb, sinusoidally
distributed. Assume that full-pitch coils have been used.

b The no-load test performed on a 1000 kVA, 3000 V, 50 Hz, three- [5M] CO L3

The effective armature resistance is 0.25 ohms. When short-circuit
test was conducted, a fi eld current of 50 A was required to
circulate the full-load current. Determine the percentage voltage
regulation of the alternator on full-load at 0.8 lagging power
factor by mmf method.

8 a) Describe the effect of change in mechanical power input in the [6M] CO L2
parallel operation of alternators. 5
b Describe synchronizing alternators with infinite bus bars. [4M] CO L2

9 a) Discuss the load sharing between alternators with change in [5M] CO L2
excitation and prime mover speed on any one alternator. 5
b A 2 pole 50 Hz, 3- phase alternator is excited to generate the bus [5M] CO L3
) bar voltage of 11 kV on no load. The machine is star connected 5
and short circuit for this excitation is 1000 A. Calculate the
synchronizing power per degree of mechanical displacement of
the rotor and corresponding synchronizing torque.

UNIT-5
1 a) Why at any load, the power factor decreases and the armature [5M] CO L2
0 current increases if the field current is varied above and below the 6
normal excitation. Explain.
b A 2500 V, three phase star-connected synchronous motor has a [5M] CO L3
) resistance of 0.35 ohms per phase and synchronous reactance of 6
2.2 ohms per phase. The motor is operating at 0.75 power factor
leading with a line current of 250 A. Determine the excitation
voltage per phase.

1 Discuss in detail about variation of current and power factor with [10M CO L2
