Irrigation Water Requirements
Submission Deadline: 15th December 2023, Thursday
(Use separate copy for assignment and it is mandatory to copy the questions.
No need to do questions done in class)
1. A stream of 150 liter per second was diverted from canal and 110 liter per second was
delivered to the field. An area of 2.2 hectares was irrigated in 8hrs. Effective depth of
rootzone was 1.5m The runoff loss in the field was 445 m3. The depth of water
penetration varied linearly from 1.5 at the head end of the field to 1.1m at the tail end.
Available moisture holding capacity of the soil is 200 mm per meter depth of soil.
Determine the water conveyance efficiency, water application efficiency, water storage
efficiency and water distribution efficiency. Irrigation was started at a moisture
extraction level of 50%. [8 marks, 2073 Bhadra Regular]
(Note: Use “FC – initial moisture extraction” in the formula itself to get FC)
2. After how many days should we supply water to soil in order to ensure sufficient
irrigation of the given crop if:
i. Field capacity of the soil = 28%
ii. Permanent wilting point = 13%
iii. Dry density of soil = 1.3 gm/cc
iv. Effective depth of root zone = 70 cm
v. Reference crop evapotranspiration (ET0) = 10 mm
vi. Crop factor of the given crop (k) = 1.2
[5 marks, 2077 Chaitra Regular Modified]
3. After how many days will you irrigate in order to ensure healthy growth of crops if:
Field capacity of the soil = 29%
Density of soil = 1.3 gm/cc
Daily consumptive use = 12 mm
Permanent wilting point = 11%
Effective root zone depth = 65cm
For healthy growth moisture content must not all fall below 25%. How much irrigation
water required at outlet of the field, if the application efficiency is 75%.
[5 marks, 2075 Bhadra Regular]
4. Available moisture for the given soil is 200mm per m and maximum depth of root zone
for the crop is 0.9m. If daily consumptive use of the crop is 10mm and the canal may
operate from 8AM to 5PM only. Assume that only 50% of soil moisture is available to
the crop. Application efficiency is 85%. Calculate the required discharge if CCA is 400
ha. Calculate irrigation interval and outlet discharge.
5. A field channel has a culturable command area of 2000 hectares. The intensity of
irrigation for gram is 30% and for wheat is 50%. Gram has a kor period of 18 days and
kor depth of 12cm, while wheat has a kor period of 15 days and a kor depth of 15 cm.
Calculate the discharge of the field channel. [5 marks, 2068 Chaitra Regular]
(Note: Gram and wheat both are rabi (winter) crops)
6. Explain about soil-moisture-irrigation relationship. [8 marks, 2072 Ashwin Regular]
7. How do you calculate the frequency of irrigation on the basis of soil moisture? Water
is released at the rate of 16 cumecs at the head sluice. If the duty at the field is
80ha/cumecs and loss of water in transit 20%. Find the area of the land that can be
irrigated. [8 marks, 2073 Magh Back]
8. Three distributaries area used for irrigation. The details are given below. Find which
one is more efficient.
Distributary-1 Distributary-2 Distributary-3
Discharge 15 m3/s 15 m3/s 15 m3/s
CCA 15,000 ha 25,000 ha 30,000 ha
Intensity of irrigation 60% 80% 50%
Base period 200 days (cotton) 120 days (wheat) 365 days (sugarcane)
Duty 500 hec/cumec 900 hec/cumec 450 hec/cumec
[5 marks, 2072 Ashwin Regular]
9. Write down the steps for calculating irrigation requirement for rice crop.
[4 marks, 2069 Bhadra Regular]
