Assignments
There are two assignments specified in this document. Each assignment is described in terms of:
the procedure for how the assignment should be conducted; its objective; working mode; and
assessment criteria. The assignments are group work assignments, to be conducted in groups of 2-3
students.
Furthermore, the examination is specified in this document in terms of the procedure for how the
examination will be conducted.
ASSIGNMENT 1:
There are many important questions connected with: the ways that information technology makes it
easy and cheap to collect and store personal data; the moral and ethical risks that are associated
with the storage and use of this data; and the development of the technology that makes this
possible. In this assignment, you will be asked to reflect on some of these issues, for us as
individuals, as a society, and for IT professionals.
Begin by watching the documentary film “Peter Vlemmix - PANOPTICON documentary about
your privacy” via this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUyB0Tsj6jE. When watching it,
reflect upon the issues and questions that are raised for you as an individual, for society as a whole,
and the connections to the ethical dilemmas posed in the role of an IT professional.
Your task in this assignment is to analyze the ethical issues raised in this documentary, and the way
in which they affect us as individuals, members of society, and IT professionals.
Procedure
You as students (in your group) should watch the documentary, and together discuss the ethical
issues that are raised for individuals, for society, and for IT professionals. Base your discussions on
the issues raised in the film, and relate them to chapter 2 in the course book, “Privacy in the (Post-)
Digital Era?”
Feel free to relate the issues to your impressions and understanding of ethical standards and issues
in your home country.
The results of your discussions should be summarized in a written report, which you will present
and discuss at a seminar together with your classmates. You will also be expected to act as an
opponent group and give comments on the work of one other group of students, and generally
contribute to the overall discussions.
Objective
The overall aim of this assignment is to train the student to perform ethical reflections in their
future possible professional role as an IS Developer.
