EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The paper focuses on examining Highlands Coffee's e-commerce strategy as it
moves its commercial activities online. The e-commerce strategy is essential for building
a brand, boosting sales, and interacting with customers in the online space.
The research paper introduces the market circumstances, online consumer trends,
and e-commerce advantages that support Highlands Coffee's decision to expand its online
presence. Moreover, the essay describes the e-commerce environment for coffee, which
makes it easier to spot prospects and problems. In order to create effective campaigns, it
examines the online goals and target markets of Highlands Coffee. The essay explores
online customer outreach strategies using e-commerce websites, social media, and email
marketing. The thesis highlights Highlands Coffee's development of a user-friendly
online purchasing process with transparent product information and credibility-enhancing
review management. The report provides an overview of Highlands Coffee's internet
advertising, which includes paid advertisements, interesting content, the utilization of
influencers, and efforts to increase brand visibility.
Based on this information, the report proposes several strategic recommendations. It
suggests using relevant keywords to accommodate client preferences and promote repeat
purchases, it is suggested that loyalty programs be implemented for frequent customers
and payment method diversification be implemented. To encourage customer connection
and improve engagement, personalized recommendations, and interactive elements are
also suggested.

1.1. Contextualizing E-commerce Strategies for F&B Retailers
The food and beverage (F&B) business has gone through a paradigm shift in recent
years, partially due to the growing significance of e-commerce. This paradigm shift
toward e-commerce in the F&B sector is notable for creating an extensive effect on
business strategies. The integration of digital platforms is altering traditional customer
engagement, product distribution, and market reach rules. As a result, food and beverage
merchants must look ahead in order to remain competitive and relevant in an increasingly
virtual world. Consumer behavior and market dynamics have been shaped by digital
platforms, which have reshaped how firms connect with their customers and run their
operations.
Highlands Coffee Coffee, a well-established player in the Vietnamese F&B market,
distinguishes itself through its strategic approach to digital transformation. This paper
digs into Highlands Coffee Coffee's journey, investigating its historical origins, strategic
positioning, and the relevance of its transfer to the digital realm. The authors obtain
useful insights into the larger implications of e-commerce adoption in the F&B industry

David Thai in 1999 with the intention of strengthening Vietnam's long-standing coffee
history and conveying the attitude of pride and a harmonious relationship between
tradition and modernity.
Highlands Coffee Coffee is grown by farmers in a land with several thousand years
of tradition. Throughout its 20-year development, Highlands Coffee Coffee has made
attempts to become closer to Vietnamese people, change their habits, and bring
Vietnamese people an entirely fresh perspective on enjoying and experiencing coffee, all
while respecting the inherent traditional values.
Highlands Coffee Coffee, founded on the values of quality and authenticity, has
been leading the way in demonstrating Vietnamese coffee to a global audience. Its
historical origins tell the story of a brand that not only responded to changing
expectations from customers but also shaped the future of the entire industry.

Highlands Coffee Coffee's origins and history have been inextricably related to the
development of Vietnamese coffee culture. The brand has had an enormous influence on
how consumers perceive and enjoy coffee by creating novel mixes and cultivating a
distinct ambiance. Its presence has become recognized with a high-quality coffee
experience, representing the brand's dedication to quality and authenticity.
Furthermore, Highlands Coffee Coffee's market presence goes beyond its product
offers. The brand has become ingrained in Vietnamese society, serving as a focus for
social interactions, gatherings, and cultural exchanges. Because of the role it plays in
forming the coffee landscape, it has enhanced consumer participation and loyalty,
establishing it as an essential component of the country's F&B industry.
1.2.2. Significance of Digital Transformation for Highlands Coffee Coffee
For established F&B firms like Highlands Coffee Coffee, the digital transformation
age brings both opportunities and problems. Embracing the digital ecosystem provides
opportunities to improve consumer interaction, optimize operations, and expand market
reach. This change, however, requires a deliberate approach that addresses the unique

Making the decision of beginning a digital transformation journey was made by

country.
The cafes of the brand are comforting havens for coffee connoisseurs, with a cozy
and inviting ambiance that stimulates interaction and relaxation. Each location is
deliberately designed to reflect the local culture and preferences, generating a sense of
familiarity while retaining Highlands Coffee Coffee's distinct personality. This rigorous
attention to both quality and atmosphere has contributed to the brand's touch with a wide
range of consumer categories.
II.2. Strategic Positioning in the Vietnamese Coffee Landscape
Highlands Coffee Coffee's positioning strategy emphasizes developing a distinct
brand identity that connects with its target audiences and distinguishes it from
competitors. The brand offers itself as a high-end option in the Vietnamese coffee

Highlands Coffee Coffee highlights itself as a sanctuary for coffee connoisseurs
seeking an upgraded experience by emphasizing its commitment to obtaining high-
quality coffee beans and delivering an attractive ambiance. The brand additionally

from mass-market competitors.

III.1.SWOT analysis of Highlands Coffee
III.1.1. Strengths
Highlands Coffee Coffee has many strengths to help improve its ability to succeed
on its e-commerce platform. First, in Vietnam, there is a significant shift from traditional
shopping to online shopping, especially after the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Highlands Coffee is a brand that already has a solid reputation and can be appealing to
online customers who are already familiar with the stores. Furthermore, the company's
extensive and diverse product, which includes a wide range of coffees, cakes and related
products, can be easily adapted for online sales, providing customers with a wide range
of products diverse selection.
Ultimately, making it easier for customers to order their favorite drinks and related
products from the comfort of their home or work improves their overall experience.
III.1.2. Weaknesses
Currently, Highlands Coffee's coffee costs range from 30,000 to 60,000 VND. The
Vietnamese market, where coffee is currently being exported at the fifth-highest rate in
the world, does not consider this price to be appropriate. This cost is quite high when
compared to the norm. Highlands Coffee shop system only appears in big and developed
cities is a weakness of Highlands Coffee. This comes from identifying their target
customers as those with a good to high income. Because people's income levels in small
and medium cities rarely match Highlands Coffee's product price.

Highlands Coffee has taken advantaged of the evolving landscape of e-commerces
to its advantage. The upsurge in online shopping offers a compelling avenue for the brand
to diversify its revenue streams, marking a significant opportunity for growth. By
embracing e-commerce, the brand can transcend geographical boundaries, accessing a
broader customer base both locally and internationally, even in remote areas.
III.1.4. Threats
The online coffee market is currently undergoing intense competition, with
numerous domestic and international brands vying to captivate the discerning clientele.
To establish a distinct presence within this landscape, Highlands necessitates an
innovative approach to leave an indelible mark on the consumer base.
Furthermore, confronting the potential for negative customer experiences presents a
critical challenge. Any disruptions in the online shopping process, such as delayed
deliveries or inconsistent quality, have the potential to influence the brand's perception in
the minds of consumers.
Moreover, in the field of e-commerce, network security and safeguarding data
privacy become important. Given the escalating reliance on digital transactions, the e-
commerce platform becomes susceptible to cybersecurity threats capable of
compromising sensitive customer information. Protection these threats is critical to
maintaining customer trust and brand reputation.
III.2.PESTLE Analysis of Highlands Coffee
PESTLE analysis is a technique for identifying the major variables affecting the
financial and operational environment of an organization. Applying PESTLE analysis to
an e-commerce platform will help Highlands, an online coffee brand, better understand
the important variables that can influence their strategy and business operations.
III.2.1. Political
With a stable political environment, as well as policies and decrees to support business
development and protect the legitimate rights and interests of businesses in our country,
many favorable conditions have been created, not just for Highland. Coffee, like many
other businesses, has a favorable environment for long-term growth.

Highlands needs to comply with regulations and laws related to e-commerce to avoid
violations and ensure legal compliance and avoid legal risks. In addition, Highlands
should have an online consumer protection policy to protect its customer information.
III.2.2. Economic
Fluctuations in the global economy can have an impact on consumer purchasing
power and purchasing behavior, affecting Highlands sales. Furthermore, changes in the
exchange rate affect the prices and profits of Highlands businesses.
III.2.3. Sociocultural
After the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the rise of online shopping and
changes in consumers' shopping habits have affected Highlands's advertising, product
distribution and revenue.
III.2.4. Technological
Many scientific and technological achievements have been applied in the field of
coffee chain business. Highlands has used machines to prepare, serve, and use technology
to reach out to customers, promote, and expand influence.
III.2.5. Environmental
Environmental protection is always a challenge for businesses, and the issue of
environmental protection is closely related to coffee cups, straws, and plastic bags for
coffee chains. Highlands strives to create an environmentally conscious brand image.
III.2.6. Legal
Highlands ensures that their online advertising and sales comply with copyright laws
and do not infringe on the intellectual property rights of others. Furthermore, when
collecting and using customer information, businesses ensure compliance with data
protection measures.

IV. Highlands Coffee Coffee’s Segmentation
IV.1. Defining Precise Segmentation Criteria for Online Consumers
Conducting thorough market research to discern the preferences and behaviors of
target audience segments is integral. This not only assists in identifying the appropriate
products for each segment but also uncovers competitive dynamics and potential growth
prospects for the business.
Since its launch, Highlands Coffee Coffee has acquired more than 500 outlets
(primarily concentrated in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City), spanning across 32 provinces
and cities nationwide. Highlands Coffee' stores are strategically located in prime
positions, such as city centers or along major thoroughfares. However, in addition to this,
Highlands Coffee Coffee has not yet expanded significantly into the Mekong Delta,
mountainous regions, and western areas.
Prior to launching the online expansion initiative, Highlands Coffee Coffee
primarily concentrated on cultivating an image that resonated with coffee enthusiasts
seeking warm and cozy space and distinctive ambiance in coffee stores. The age of
customers that Highlands Coffee targets are young and middle-aged. Additionally,
Highlands Coffee Coffee aimed to engage consumers who were drawn to the prospect of
relaxation, productivity, or group interactions within the café's setting.
Post implementation of the online expansion strategy, Highlands Coffee Coffee
broadened its market reach to encompass both online and offline clientele. By leveraging
the advantages of online outreach and maintaining the essence of its offline experience,
Highlands Coffee Coffee managed to extend its brand presence and uphold its appeal to
the customer base.
IV.2. Crafting Niche Customer Segments Rooted in Coffee Preferences
Highlands Coffee Coffee aims to serve to diversify the dining needs of customers,
especially those with Western-style eating habits. Are middle-class people, foreign
tourists or people who have lived abroad.
Therefore, Highlands Coffee Coffee selects the best, best coffee beans to roast and
serve for drinks, serving Vietnamese-style Robusta coffee along with international-
flavored Arabica products. At Highlands Coffee, customers can enjoy world famous
coffees such as Espresso - Full City Roast, Espresso - Cinnamon Roast or a cup of pure
Vietnamese iced coffee. life, from the traditional to the modern, from the products that

The “kiềng ba chân” stance, on which Highlands Coffee Coffee’s Beverage Group
was founded, has proven successful for the Highlands Coffee to this day.
Six categories make up Highlands Coffee Coffee’s beverage group: traditional
coffee, phidi, espresso coffee, tea, frozen drinks, and other beverages. However, there are
just three major categories: Coffee (traditional, phidi, espresso), Tea (lotus, fruit, and
tropical teas), and Freeze. There will be one representative product for each of the
following three major groups: Phin Sua Da represents CAFÉ, Tra Sen Vang represents
TEA, Freeze Tra Xanh represents FREEZE

Customers may easily find these three products in every picture, commercial, and
poster of Highlands Coffee Coffee products if frequently visit their website and Facebook
page. In the past, Highlands Coffee Coffee has consistently concentrated on promoting
advertising and promotions for Phin Milk Ice, Golden Lotus Tea, and Green Tea Freeze
to draw clients from all facets and form core goods.
Customers choose Highlands Coffee Coffee because of the compatibility between
these three primary groupings, each of which contains three staple dishes that satisfy even
the most discerning diners’ needs. For instance, if you had coffee yesterday, you might
want to drink lotus tea today and freeze green tea tomorrow.

to spend more by getting them to buy something related to what they had bought.
Additionally, having extra pastries on hand helps to fulfill women’s melancholy needs.

Despite being a well-known brand in the beverage sector, Highlands Coffee has
participated in promotions before. To attract clients, the brand actively runs alluring

implemented a membership card system to promote consumer loyalty. Their VIP card

Highlands Coffee provides a variety of packaged coffee alternatives, including
instant coffee, canned coffee, and roasted coffee. They have spent a lot of money on

quality packaging for their roasted coffee goods in particular. The roasted and ground
coffee is tastefully presented in premium paper bags with the company logo and a sleek,
opulent style, emphasizing eco-friendliness.
The packaging for the roasted and ground coffee is made from Kraft paper, which is
sustainable. It displays important product details and attractive graphics while
showcasing the roasted coffee beans in a distinctive red color. Utilizing Kraft paper
supports environmental sustainability initiatives by minimizing plastic waste. Consumers
were moved by Highlands Coffee’s imaginative paper packaging, which had a significant
effect.

The Highlands Coffee brand has benefited from advantageous economic chances to
employ technology in the context of social estrangement. Highlands Coffee is under
pressure from the competition to lower pricing on F&B e-commerce platforms, though.
To preserve revenue and create a solid foundation for the future without relying on a third
party, the brand has built its application and coverage on BAEMIN, Gojek, GrabFood,
and ShopeeFood.
V.2.1. Highlands Coffee App - Highlands Coffee Ordering App
Highlands Coffee has been in business for 16 years and has grown to have more
than 180 outlets nationwide. Before the simultaneous collapse of numerous cafes,
Highlands Coffee was still standing and performing well. But consumers have to use a
different, more cumbersome internet ordering system to purchase a cup of Highlands
Coffee.

Highlands Coffee wants to supply products and care for its customers, thus it has
established the Highlands Coffee application to do so.
Buyers can choose their favorite drink from a wide selection of beverages, cakes,
coffee cans, and other options on the Highlands Coffee app. In addition, Highlands

rewards, file complaints, etc. through the app.
