FCTs need to copy two FGT VM licenses into each student environment and their own environment at the
beginning of the course. There are three steps to completing this process as illustrated in each section below.
Section 1
This section details the procedure to register the FGT VM licenses. A full class-set of licenses consists of 26
individual VM Licenses (totaling 12 students and one instructor each having two licenses)..
The following steps demonstrate how to receive licenses from CS, each one in a PDF file, from
[email protected] and then register the licenses:
1. Login to http://support.fortinet.com
2. Select Register/Renew

FortiGuard services are activated by default for the duration of an evaluation license.
Section 2
Prior to each training class two license files need to be transferred in to the student environment. Complete
the steps below to transfer these files:
1. Login to each student environment.
2. Drag-and-drop two files via the Java applet. A status bar will appear. The file is uploaded to the
‘c:\uploads\’ directory.
3. Copy two license files to each student environment.
Section 3
Preparation steps for lab to be completed by each student.
1. In the training environment install the first license file, from c:\uploads\, to the “Student” FGT Appliance,
http://10.0.1.254.
2. Once the license is uploaded the unit will reboot. The FortiGate will contact FortiGuard to validate the
VM license, when the license goes to status ‘valid’ it will unlock the device.
a. If the license status remains ‘pending’ then force the check. From the CLI enter “exec update-
now” to force the license verification. The status should change to ‘valid’ and now the device is
unlocked.
i. To access the CLI go to Operations > Connect to Secondary > K#-Student
ii. Enter “exec update-now”
iii. Check for Valid message or check status, get sys status.
iv. After you have entered the command “update-now” select Operations > Disconnect.
3. Connect to http://10.200.3.1 and upload the second license file. Once the license is uploaded the unit
will reboot. The FortiGate will contact FortiGuard to validate the VM license, when the license goes to
status ‘valid’ it will unlock the device.
b. If the license status remains ‘pending’ then force the check. From the CLI enter “exec update-
now” to force VM license verification.
i. To access the CLI go to Operations > Connect to Secondary > K#-Remote
ii. Enter “exec update-now”
