Method Statement

(Recovering Rig Kelly bar from borehole with cranes)

(REVISION 1)

(08-06-2023)

TPW ENGINEERING PTE LTD

Recovery Procedure
(Hoisting Kelly bar with damaged wire rope from borehole with two cranes)

Scope

This procedure describes using a mobile / crawler crane to lift a boring

machine’s Kelly bar from a borehole when the wire rope on the Kelly bar is
damaged because it risks dropping the Kelly bar into the borehole.

1) Rig a lifting line from a crane to the top lifting point on the Kelly bar. If the
lifting point is high, the access will be by using either a man cage suspended by
a crane or a boom lift.

2) Ensure the top of Kellybar secured and hoisted by the crane (C1).
3a) Slowly and gently raise the Kelly up with crane(C2) assist until the whole Kelly
bar is out of the borehole. Swing the boring machine to the side of the borehole
to dismount the boring bucket/auger etc.

To prevent the potential collision, the hoisting procedure to be supervised

closely by competent TPW staff, and the two crane operators involved in the
recovery are to be briefed to swing the crane in the opposite direction against
each other.
3b) This procedure will be applied when kellybar can not be fully extracted in
step (3a).

The remaining sections of kellybar will be removed from the borehole via the
following method:

To provide two plates (min.20mm thickness) that will be welded to the Kelly
bar as a stopper to prevent it from falling into the borehole. (The steel plate
stopper as shown in the photos below)

The sketch of the stopper plate and welding shown as below:

6mm fillet weld

500mm Length 300mm one side

Min.350mm

Welding check: Kellybar

Design Shear Strength of Weld:

fvw.d = (fu / SQRT(3)) / (βw x ɣM2)= (435/1.73)/(1.25*1.0)=200 N/mm2

Required Welding Length by fillet weld 6mm, kellybar weight 10 tons:

Lreq = Fw.Rd / (fvw.d x a)=10*1000*10/(200*0.38*6)=220mm

Total welding length provided 300mm X2 = 600mm, welding length is sufficient.

Cut the Kelly bar above the stopper plates.

Slowly and gently raise the Kelly up with one crane until the whole Kelly bar is
out of the borehole. Swing the boring machine to the side of the borehole to
dismount the boring bucket/auger etc.

To hook the lower Kelly bar with a shackle and wire rope to the stopper plates.

Unhook the crane lifting line from the boring machine Kelly bar, slowly and
gently lower the boring machine’s mast to a horizontal position to replace the
Kellybar’s wire rope. Replacement of wire rope shall be in accordance to
Operation & Maintenance Manual of the Boring Rig where available.

4) Lower and rest the Kelly bar on the ground. Secure two lifting slings with
SWL higher than the weight of the Kelly bar to the lifting point of the rotator
mechanism to prevent it from sliding down during the lowering of the boring
machine’s mast.
5) Unhook the crane lifting line from the boring machine Kelly bar, slowly and
gently lower the boring machine’s mast to a horizontal position to replace the
Kellybar’s wire rope. The Replacement of wire rope shall be in accordance with
the Boring Rig's Operation & Maintenance Manual where available.

*Where repair or service manual is not available from the manufacturer, a

similar model manual shall be used as a reference as most boring machine
design and functions are similar in nature.

6) Old wire rope shall be wound out of the drum and replaced with new wire
rope with the right specifications.
