STEM - BC11LC IIIc 1

The document provides a lesson plan for teaching continuity of functions in Grade 11 Basic Calculus. It includes objectives to illustrate continuity at a number and cite its real-life importance. Students will practice determining continuity through examples of limits at given values. The lesson involves defining terms, worked examples, student practice problems, and an evaluation involving illustrating continuity through limits. The goal is for students to understand when a function is continuous or not.

LESSON PLAN IN GRADE 11
BASIC CALCULUS

Content Standard: The learner demonstrates an understanding of the basic concepts of limit and
continuity of a function.

Performance Standard: The learners shall be able to formulate and solve accurately real-life
problems involving continuity of functions.

Learning Competency: The learners illustrate continuity of a function at a number.

Code: STEM_BC11LC-IIIc-1
I. OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the students must be able to:
a. Illustrate continuity of a function at a number; and
b. Cite the importance of illustrating continuity of a function at a number in real – life
situations.

II. SUBJECT MATTER:

A. Topic: Continuity of a Function at a Number
Session Duration: 60 minutes
B. Instructional Materials: LCD projector, manila paper, colored papers
C. References:
- Basic Calculus by John Gabriel P. Pelias, pages 66 - 69

III. PROCEDURES:
A. Preliminary Activities:
a. Prayer
b. Greetings
c. Checking of attendance
d. The 3 Golden Rules:
1. Observe silence.
2. Stay at your proper seat.
3. Ask permission.

e. Review
Evaluate the value of the function given the value for x.
1. f(x) = x + 1, where x = -1
2. f(x) = 2x – 3, where x =0
3. f(x) = 4x +3, where x = 2
f. Definition of Terms

CONTINUITY OF A FUNCTION OF ONE VARIABLE.

A function y = f(x) is said to be continuous at point x = a if the following three

conditions are satisfied :

i.) f(a) is defined ,

ii.) exists (i.e., is finite) , and

iii.) .

Illustrative Examples: ( I do it)

1. Determine if the following functions are continuous at x = 1.

SOLUTION 1 : Function f is defined at x=1 since

i.) f(1) = 2 .

The limit

= 3 (1) - 5

= -2 ,

ii.) .

But

iii.) ,

so condition iii.) is not satisfied and function f is NOT continuous at x=1 .

g. Guided Practice ( We do it)

What if x=-2?

Solutions:

i.) f(-2) = (-2)2 + 2(-2) = 4-4 = 0 .

The left-hand limit

= (-2)2 + 2(-2)

=4-4

=0.

The right-hand limit

= (-2)3 - 6(-2)

= -8 + 12

=4.

Since the left- and right-hand limits are not equal, ,

ii.) does not exist,

and condition ii.) is not satisfied. Thus, function f is NOT continuous at x=-2 .

h. Independent Practice ( You do it)

SOLUTION 2 : Function f is defined at x=-2 since

i.) f(-2) = (-2)2 + 2(-2) = 4-4 = 0 .

The left-hand limit

= (-2)2 + 2(-2)

=4-4

=0.

The right-hand limit

= (-2)3 - 6(-2)

= -8 + 12 = 4.
Since the left- and right-hand limits are not equal, ,

ii.) does not exist,

and condition ii.) is not satisfied. Thus, function f is NOT continuous at x=-2 .

SOLUTION 3 : Determine if Function f is defined at x=0 since

i.) f(0) = 2 .

The left-hand limit

=2.

The right-hand limit

=2.

Thus, exists with

ii.) .

Since

iii.) ,

all three conditions are satisfied, and f is continuous at x=0 .

E. Application/ Values Integration:

1. Think – Pair – Share. ½ crosswise

By pair, the students will be asked to illustrate if the following functions are continuous at a
given value of x or not. (5 minutes)

lim x2 + 3x
x→3

2. Insert Real – Life Applications:

Can anybody cite some real – life situations applying the concepts of continuity?

IV. Evaluation
½ crosswise
Illustrate the continuity of
2
1. lim 3x -2x + 4
2
x→2 2. lim x −2 x
x →2
Explain your solutions.

V. Assignment
Explain when a function becomes a continuous or not.
