4.0 RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS ON PROJECT MANAGEMENT

METHODOLOGIES AT SAMSUNG

As a leading global technology firm with vast manufacturing processes, Samsung

uses a sophisticated approach to project management methodologies. While the
details may change in every new project and department, the hybrid approach that
mixes both traditional and agile methodologies used by Samsung fits well into the
industry’s dynamics.
4.1 Traditional Methodologies: Specifically, in large-scale and structured projects,
Samsung has been incorporating various aspects of different project management
methodologies; particularly, it makes use of the Waterfall model. The Waterfall
model adopts a step by step approach and each stage is required to be finished before

3
proceeding to the next one. This approach is suitable for projects that have been
specified with great clarity and in consistent operating conditions.

4.2 Agile Approaches: Recognizing that flexibility and adaptability are essential for
success in today’s ever-changing industry, Samsung has also adopted agile project
management methodologies. This strategy proves crucial in the projects involving
innovative products and swift reactions to markets dynamics like the manufacture of
new smartphone models or software updates.

4.3 Hybrid approach and reason to use it:

 Project Diversity: Considering that Samsung produces products from smart

phones and appliances for the home, it is impractical to apply a one-size-fits-all
project management approach.
 Adaptability: However, the electronics industry has a very dynamic
environment. The use of agile practices by Samsung helps the company adjust
quickly to evolving technologies, shifting customer tastes, as well as trends in the
market.
 Risk Mitigation: Combining aspects of the traditional and agile methodologies
will reduce these risks within Samsung. Agile practices supply the necessary
flexibility for fluid and uncertain environments whereas traditional methods give
stability and control in well defined projects.
 Efficiency: Agile methodologies may be useful in manufacturing processes,
especially when dealing with prototyping and testing that are often done several
times. Samsung can achieve incremental improvements, collect inputs and adjust
as they go.
 Customer-Centric Development: Agile methodologies put emphasis on close
collaboration with customers and the need to respond promptly to feedback. For
example, in consumer electronics where user experience is paramount this
approach matches with what Samsung has in mind in providing products to
customer specifications.

4
5.0 ANALYSIS ON PROJECT LIFECYCLE AT SAMSUNG :

The journey of the project life cycle in the manufacturing processes of Samsung
begins with the concept and ends at delivering the final products. A delicate blend of
innovation, technical skills, and business processes define every stage of this
process. Here is an overview of the key stages:
1. Concept and Design: The concept and design phase comes into play right at the
beginning of a project and outlines what the product will be about, the features it will
have as well as the over all beauty of the product. Designers, engineers and product
managers collaborate in cross-functional teams to convert market needs into tangible
design specifications. To define the scope or goal of project; project manager ensure
that the project will contribute to the business objective.

2. Prototyping: At this stage, the project enters the prototype phase; and at this point,
the design is already set. This gives visualization and validation to design concepts
and offers a physical model to evaluate the design. Project managers work hand-in-
hand with the design and engineer’s team to validate the prototype against the
specified design criterion. They manage the timeline, allocate resources, and assess
risks so that the prototyping phase does not stall or run into problems.
3. Testing: Testing is crucial in order to ascertain the functionality, dependability, and
consistency of products with quality. Quality assurance teams team up with project
managers in order to establish a comprehensive testing plan comprised of functional,
performance, and experience testing.

4. Production: The production phase is one that takes into consideration the
production of the product in large scales after design and testing. Project managers
ensure the quality standards, and deadlines, proper resource management, appropriate
measures in reducing risks, and resolving any contingencies during production.
5. Delivery: Delivery phase includes finalization of goods and bringing them to the
market. Project teams interact with logistic, marketing, and sales counterparts to effect
an effortless handshake between manufacture and distribution. Project managers act
as facilitators, communicators, and problem solvers during the course of their project
lifecycle. Their responsibilities include:

 Project Planning

5
 Team Coordination
 Risk Management.
 Budget Oversight
 Stakeholder Communication
