Cable Size and Current Capacity

- Always fully remove extension plugs from outlets before use and do not exceed their maximum load capacity. - Extension plugs should not be used for appliances like washing machines, fridges, ovens, etc. that draw higher power. - The document provides information on selecting the appropriate wire gauge based on the intended application and load in amps, such as 18-gauge for low-voltage lighting up to 10 amps and 4-gauge for heavy duty appliances over 60 amps.

Choosing Electrical Wire

Size

You may determine the gauge based on the

helpful pointers below assigned according to Wire Use- Rated Ampacity:
o 18-gauge are used for low-voltage lighting and lamp cords in 10 amps
o 16-gauge are used for light-duty extension cords supporting 13 amps
o 14-gauge are usedfor light fixtures, lamps, lighting circuits with 15 amps
o 12-gauge are used in kitchen, bathroom, outdoor receptacles, and 120-volt air
conditioners supporting 20 amps
o 10-gauge are used in electric clothes dryers, 240-volt window air conditioners,
electric water heaters supporting 30 amps
o 6-gauge are used for cook tops and ranges carrying 40-50 amps
o 4-gauge are used for electric furnaces and large electric heaters protected at 60 amps
