Graphing Sine and Cosine Functions HMW

This document discusses graphing sine and cosine functions. It provides examples of calculating sine and cosine values at various angles in degrees and radians. The key features of sine and cosine graphs are outlined, including that they are periodic with period 2π, their domain is (-∞, ∞) and range is [-1,1], they oscillate between -1 and 1, sine is odd and cosine is even, and their amplitude is 1. Students then practice identifying properties of sine and cosine graphs through multiple choice and fill-in-the-blank questions.

Explanation/ Content
Key features of sine and cosine graphs:

• 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑥 and 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝑥 are periodic functions with period of 2𝜋.

• The domain of 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑥 and 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝑥 is (−∞, ∞).
• The range of 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑥 and 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝑥 is [−1,1]. They oscillate between -1 and 1.
So the maximum value is 1 and the minimum value is -1.
• The sine graph is symmetric with respect to the origin because it is an
odd function. 𝑠𝑖𝑛(−𝑥) = −𝑠𝑖𝑛(𝑥)
• The cosine graph is symmetric with respect to the y-axis because it is
an even function. 𝑐𝑜𝑠(−𝑥) = 𝑐𝑜𝑠(𝑥)
• The amplitude of 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑥 and 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝑥 is 1. The amplitude is half the distance
between the maximum point and the minimum point (or the distance
from the x axis and the maximum or minimum).
• The middle line is the x-axis 𝑦 = 0.
