Describe Student learning in relation to Creating, Performing, and Assessing as a result

of this Series of lessons: In this mini unit, I wanted to emphasize the student led creation

process. I wanted the students to try to create something musical in small groups and practice

working with other students, working through conflict and creating something that is unique to

them, rather than being fully guided by me. The students Created their own work in small

groups, with inspiration from the introduction videos. I walked around the classroom during

rehearsal time to help guide them if they were feeling stuck, and answer any question they may

have. On the last day, the students Performed their creation for the other groups and myself. At

the end of each class, we had a period of group discussion/reflection time, which acted as our

main form of Assessment. The students filled out a guided reflection form on day 3, after

watching their peers' performance.

Analyze your musicianship and its effect on student learning: My own musicianship was

demonstrated in the examples that I gave to the students. On day 2, the class and I came up

with various composition examples, guided by me. On day 3, my musicianship and experience

was demonstrated through our performance and audience etiquette discussion.

Describe how your classroom environment promoted student learning: Students were

separated into their small groups on opposite sides of the classroom. They were allowed to

utilize the small storage and practice rooms if they needed a quiet space to work through their

creation. With us all residing in the same room, that made myself more accessible for any

questions that needed to be answered. It also made it easier for me to walk around and give

guidance, if needed.

Based on this analysis of your teaching and student learning, describe how you can

improve the instructional design and implementation of the Series of Lessons for a
similar group of students in the future. Be specific, and support your ideas with student

assessment data from your portfolio: One thing I would change is to be more up front with

the grading/reflection process. I failed to show the students the rubric initially. If they had the

rubric on day 1, that may have helped in their planning process. Some students were confused

on day 1 as to what our final performances were going to look like. Another thing I might do

differently is give the students more time to create, instead of 1 and a half class periods, maybe

give them 2 full class periods. I would also provide more examples of what this project could

look like. Maybe it would be helpful to show performance videos from previous years.
