CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Smoke/gas detector has become an active component in fire prevention ,MQ6

has ability to detect smoke or gas leaks, so that's the reason why we can prevent fire
ignition.

The fire detector can’t detect gas leak or through thick smoke that causes fire.
Using MQ6 smoke/gas detector it can detect gas leak or just a simple smoke/gas

detector it can detect gas leak or smoke faster.

The MQ6 is a semi-conductor device for detecting the levels of propane and
butane in the air. Since liquified petroleum gas (LPG) is composed of these two gases
then the MQ6 can be used as LPG sensor.

Background of Study

It was in the year 2005 that the first ever Arduino board was born in the
classrooms of the interactive design institute in Lurea, Italy. Well if you are not very
familiar with the term, an arduino is an open source microcontroller based
development board A that has opened the doors of electronics to a number of
designers and creative engineers.

It was in the interactive design institute that a hardware thesis was contributed
for a wiring design by a colombian student named Hernando Barrangan. A team of
fire developers worked on this thesis and when the new wring platform was complete,
they worked to make it to much lighter, less expensive, and available to the open
source community. The new prototype board, the Arduino, created by Massimo Banzi
and other founders, is a low cost microcontroller board that allows even novice to do
great things in electronics.

IETI Marikina was established at year 1988 together with IETI Cainta. It was
first located at third floor Rempson building, shoe avenue(formerly Munding avenue),
Sto. Nino, Marikina city. It initially offers techvoc courses. In year 2000, IETI
Marikina relocated at #34 Lark st. Sta Elena, Marikina city and offered baccalaureate
computer course.

As of today, IETI Marikina is offering Bachelor of Science in Information

Technology (BSIT), Information Communication Technology (ICT) Hotel and
Restaurant Services (HRS) and Consumer Electronics and Electronical Technology

(CEET). Now the School was given certification and recognition to open Senior High
School.

In IETI they are using a fire detector system that is capable of detecting fire
and when it detects the fire this is the time where it will give an alarm and it signals
the water sprinkler to work, For the use of MQ6 smoke/gas detector it can detect the
smoke or gas leak in the area, Using MQ6 sensor it can fastly alarm the surrounding
are

Theoretical/ Conceptual Framework

Albagul A. 2016 The fastest way to warn people about a fire ignition is by means
of smoke detector or another automatic device. A smoke detector is a special device which
detects tiny smoke particles given off while something burns. In the risk of fire it activates
the fire alarm system or sounds an alarm.

The easy way to warn a people is a smoke or fire detector to less a cause of death .

Mohd rafiqul 2015 According to the Guide for standard messages, fire is in top
five causes of death inUnited States of America and it is also the third main cause of
incidental injury and death through the children under the age of 15. Every year fires kill on
average 3,635people in more than 1.587,000 fires in United States

Base on the the researcher the higest rist of death is fire in america .using a smoke
sensor the will be alarm and warn the people on the bulidin

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents different articles, literatures and researches that have significant
relatedness to the study that will help the researcher to gain more information about the
current study. It will also provide more insight to have better understanding and perspective
to the objectives of the study.

Foreign Literature

Mulholland (2002) In the context of these statistics, it is understandable that significant public
safety efforts are focused on ensuring that working smoke alarms are installed in 100% of homes. But
at least one recent study by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has shown
that, even when working smoke alarms are present, the margin between available and safe egress
times has shrunk over the past 30 years.

In this study smoke alarms are the best innovation which help to reducing the rate of
residential fire deaths Residential fires present threats to the public health and safety.

Meacham, B.J (1992) An optical smoke detector has been considered as a replacement
for the ionization chamber smoke detector. It detects a fire when smoke particles interact

with a beamof light passing through it. Two physical phenomena are important: obscuration
and scattering. Obscuration systems are sensitive to the attenuation of a beam of light shining
across a space, caused by the scattering and absorption of the light by smoke particles.

Studies have shown that the amount of incident light scattered by a particle is mainly
determined by the size, shape and refractive index of the particle, wavelength and intensity of
incident light and the angle of scatter

Schifiliti, et al, (2002) There are numerous experimental measurements that are used to
characterize smoke. The most common measurement of smoke is in terms of light attenuation
or extinction. Light attenuation, the decrease in luminous intensity due to the absorbtion,
reflection, and refraction of light by particles (smoke), is commonly referred to as
obscuration. This measurement is relevant to evaluating visibility through smoke andis also
used as a means of grossly estimating the response of smoke detectors (despite the fact that
neither ionization nor photoelectric detectors operate based on light attenuation).

In this study light attenuation is measured by aligning a light beam and photocell at a
given distance apart (the pathlength of the light, l). Such a device is called by several names
including optical density meter.

Daniel D. Dasig jr (2015) Fire considered being natural or man-made, thus the

major circuits to compensate the system operation. It includes Detection and Initiating
Devices (DEADS), Notification Devices (NODES), Central Station Monitor (CSM),

Annunciation Devices (ANODES) and the Suppression Circuitry. The DEADS is composed
of a smoke detector and smoke ionization sensors which transmit initiated signal to CSM.

The study shows that these are active devices like smoke alarms attached to every room
designed to give alarms to the room occupants, Fire considered being natural or man made
thus the management shall provide safetyof the building occupant.

Perilla, Villanueva, Cacanindin, Palaoag (2018) The main objective of this study was
to design and integrate Internet of Things (IoT) to an Arduino-based fire safety system that
gives alert to fire-fighting facilities, authorities and building occupants to possibly prevent
fire occurrences or reduce the probable damages it may cause.

The researchers conducted literature and technology reviews that established a more
detailed definition of the topic and gave them ideas about the latest technology to be utilized
for a fire safety system. At the same time, qualitative methods such as surveys,

Abaya, Cabico, Domigo, Diaz, Rivera (2016) Fire alarm system is considered as one
of the most essential mechanisms for safety against fire. In fact, most structural buildings
especially the commercial ones are required by law to be equipped with this technology. The
proposed system structure is an integration of sensors, microcontrollers and wireless sending
of data. Homes, offices, schools or any building structure equipped with this technology will
be an implementing measure in reducing the occurrence of destructive and killer fires.

This information has motivated the development of an embedded technology of

detecting and locating fire occurrence for possible deployment in the BFP agencies or fire
stations in the country to provide immediate response and actions in mitigating fire incidents.

Foreign Studies

IAFC 2015 Study has shown that each smoke alarm technology has unique
advantages under certain fire conditions. In controlled experiments, smoke alarms based on
ionization technology tend to activate more quickly than those based on photoelectric
technology in flaming fires, while photoelectric alarms tend to activate earlier than ionization
alarms in smoldering fires.

In this study Smoke alarm technology has a several different ways to put out the fire.

The researcher recommend both (ionization and photoelectric) technologies be used in

homes.

Ahrens, M (2016) In addition to the ionization and photoelectric smoke detection

technologies that have been available for many years, a new generation of smoke detection
technologies are being developed in industry. The goal of these efforts is to produce a smoke
alarm that reacts more effectively to fires in the modern home.

In this study Ionization and photoelectric smoke detection technologies can be used for
a long time.

The researcher wants to produce smoke alarm that is more effectively in the modern times.

Bukowski (2015) Smoldering fires extend the time before lethal conditions are
reached but also provide more time for smoke detection and warning to occupants. These
fires are slow growing and may or may not transition to rapidly growing flaming fires. In a
recent NIST study, initial smoldering phases lasted anywhere from 30 to 120 minutes before
fire conditions became untenable.
15
IETI COLLEGE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, INC.
#34 Lark St., Sta. Elena, Marikina City

In this study Flaming and smoldering fires produced combustion particles of

different diameter, which conditioned the response of the different detectors. Smoldering
fires produced larger particles, which were captured faster by photoelectric detectors. On the
other hand, smaller particles, which are found in flaming fires, were detected faster by
ionization detectors.

The researcher found that ionization alarms could not detect some smoldering fires that
photoelectric alarms detected.

Local Studies

Roderick T. dela Cruz (2016) As we see more people demand better qualify of
office environment.to be more secure and safer, there is an opportunity for more technologies
such as these to be adopted, while multinational companies introduced these technologies,
local companies subsequently followed, incorporating the quality fire standards and
demanding a higher level of safety.

In this study people demand better qualify of office environment to be more secure
and safer.

The researcher wants to introduced new technologies such as smoke/fire detector to insure
the high level of safety.

Abaya , Cabico, Domingo , Diaz , Kojima ,Rivera (2015) The technology of fire

stations will provide fire fighters with real-time information that will inform and notify the

BFP persons of a fire incident and the exact location of fire.

In this study The researcher were able to improve the quality of sensitivity of fire

alarms through the use of device which is can help to their job.

Sangalang Jr. , Delgado , Lontoc ,Marquez (2015) Presented effective alternatives

to reduce unnecessary fire alarm and to upgrade the current fire alarm system in Calamba

city fire station, namely, using email and audible alarm with push button and heat sensor,

using short message service (SMS), sensor, push button, and audible alarm, and using voice

call and audible alarm with push button and heat sensor set up.

In this study the researchers were able to improve the quality of sensitivity of fire

alarms through the use of devices with combined sensors and modern method of

modification.
