How To Get Into KPMG Management Consulting

The KPMG recruitment process has 3 stages: [1] an online application requiring a CV and cover letter, [2] an online aptitude test assessing mental abilities and problem solving, and [3] case and behavioral interviews. Case interviews are applicant-led conversations where candidates work through a business problem and suggest solutions. Behavioral interviews examine a candidate's experiences and personality fit for KPMG's values like teamwork and excellence. Candidates should prepare stories highlighting these qualities and their interest in KPMG. Thorough preparation including business knowledge, math skills, case frameworks, and mock interviews can help candidates succeed at the case and fit portions of the KPMG interview process.

Interview Process
Deep-Dive
There are three standard stages in the KPMG
recruitment process.
1ST STAGE - ONLINE APPLICATION
The application process for KPMG is simple: Fill
out an online form and submit your CV and
Cover Letter. These documents must highlight
your professional experience, educational
background, and spikes/excellence in grades or
projects led at work or extracurriculars. The
KPMG HR can then analyze your potential and
aptitude for the job.

2ND STAGE - ONLINE APTITUDE TEST
The purpose of an online assessment is
to evaluate potential applicants'
mental capabilities, problem-solving
skills, and working style. In India,
typically, you get a computer-based
test which is timed and consists of three
sections: Numerical, Verbal, and
Inductive reasoning.

3RD STAGE: CASE/GUESSTIMATE INTERVIEWS
This interview stage includes 3-4 rounds
depending on location/function. 2 categories are
omnipresent in a KPMG interview :

Case interview: A 30 minute interview that

assesses a candidate's ability to evaluate and
solve business problems.

Behavioural interview: Typically lasts 20-25

minutes and is used to examine a candidate's
experience, competencies, motivations, and
personality fit.

Case Interviews
at KPMG
KPMG case interviews are applicant-led and
designed to be a conversation between the
candidate and the recruiting team as if you
were part of a team preparing for a client
presentation.
You are given time to work through
supporting information and prepare your
views when the problem is presented. You'll
then suggest to the recruiting staff and
respond to follow-up inquiries.
Fit Interviews
at KPMG
Expect behavioural questions in at least one, if
not both, video interviews, given how firmly
KPMG values fit.
Behavioural questions are employed because
recruiters believe how you performed in the
past predicts how you will act in the future.
This gives them insight into how you might deal
with difficult situations at work.
Fit questions frequently begin with "Tell me
about a time when" or "Give me an example of."

at KPMG
Prepare stories/anecdotes for these questions -

1. Why KPMG? Why Advisory?

> Given their emphasis on cultural fit, KPMG will

expect candidates to have compelling reasons for
applying to KPMG and their preferred practice
area.

2. Give Us An Example Of You Being A Team

Player. "Together" is one of KPMG's values, they
want to know how you function in a team.

> Collate instances where you exhibited teamwork

in a college club or previous job

3. Personal History. KPMG is particularly
interested in you as an individual, your past
experiences, and how they have impacted
who you are.

> The recruiting staff will be seeking

applicants who are self-aware and can
express what they've learnt from both positive
and negative past experiences. This is a
component of their core value of "Excellence."

#01 BUILD YOUR BUSINESS ACUMEN
Business intuition can help you
understand the case scenario, discover
the core causes quicker, and develop
reasonable solutions in case interviews.
It is advisable to read business

#02 HONE YOUR QUICK MATH SKILLS
One of the finest methods to improve your
case interview abilities is to practice
arithmetic. Case studies frequently feature
difficult business problems with
sophisticated quantitative data. Practising
quick math beforehand and accurately will
allow you to save brainpower and focus on
the case's strategy and solution.

#03 GO THROUGH CASE FRAMEWORKS
Understanding the fundamentals and frameworks
of case interviews is a tried and true technique to
advance in case interviews. You can quickly grasp
the important features of a case and find potential
solutions with these materials.
To begin, consider case interview frameworks like
Profitability, Market Entry, and Pricing. Pick a
casebook, read through these frameworks, and
cement them to solve cases going forward.

#4 DO MOCK CASE PRACTICE

I would strongly recommend that you

practice case interviews, one-on-one,
with a current KPMG consultant or
someone who is/has worked in
Consulting. The only tangible feedback
that matters is feedback from someone
who has been there and done that.
