Problem set in Geology for Civil Engineering

1. For a moist soil sample, the following are given.

• Total volume: V=1.2 m3
• Total mass: M=2350 kg
• Moisture content: ω=8.6%
• Specific gravity of soil solids: Gs=2.71
Determine the following:
1. Moist density.
2. Dry density.
3. Void ratio.
4. Porosity.
5. Degree of saturation.
6. Volume of water in the soil sample.
7. Determine the weight of water in kN to be added per cubic meter of soil for a 100
% degree of saturation
2. A large soil sample obtained from a borrow pit has a wet mass of 26.50kg. The
in-place volume occupied by the sample is 0.013m3. A small portion of the
sample is used to determine the water content, the wet mass is 135g and after
drying in the oven, the mass is 117g. Determine soil water content, moist density
for the condition at the borrow pit and dry density at the borrow pit.
3. The total weight of soil when saturated 1525g and the weight of the soil after
drying is 1053 g. If the specific gravity of soil is 2.84. Compute moisture content,
void ratio and porosity.
4. A soil sample weighs 14.46N and has a volume of 0.000991m3. The specific
gravity is 2.65. The volume of air is 0.000167m3. Find the dry unit weight of the
original soil sample in kN/m3
5. In a wet soil mass air occupies one - sixth of its volume and water occupies one-
third of its volume. Determine the void ratio of the soil.
6. A 0.4m3 Moist soil sample has the following: Moist Mass = 711.2 kg, Dry Mass =
623.9kg, Gs= 2.68. Determine: Effective unit weight in kN/m3
7. If a soil sample has a dry unit weight of 19.5 KN/m3 , moisture content of 8% and
a specific gravity of solids particles is 2.67. Calculate the following: a) The void
ratio. b) Moisture and saturated unit weight. c) The mass of water to be added to
cubic meter of soil to reach 80% saturation. d) The volume of solids particles
when the mass of water is 25 grams for saturation.
