Notes 2 - Power Systems Analysis 1

The document discusses various topics related to transmission lines including constants of transmission lines such as resistance, inductance, and capacitance. It discusses inductance in 3-phase overhead lines and how inductance varies with conductor spacing and phase arrangement. It also discusses capacitance in transmission lines and how it is affected by conductor geometry and spacing. The document then covers short, medium, and long transmission lines and their distinguishing characteristics. It presents the nominal pi and T models for transmission lines. It provides an example problem calculating line parameters for a 500km 400kV transmission line. Finally, it outlines an assignment on topics like Ferranti effect, transmission line transposition, surge impedance, transmission line models, and calculating voltages and losses for a

Assignment – Due 25th October,2023
1. Explain the following terms as used in power systems:
a) Ferranti effect
b) Transposition of transmission lines and its benefits
c) Surge impedance
2. Highlight the distinctive characteristics of the following: Short, medium
and long transmission lines.
3. Discuss the following transmission line models
(i) Nominal pie model
(ii) T-model
3. Three phase 50 Hz, 400 kV transmission line is 500 km long. The line
inductance is 0.97 mH/km per phase and its capacitance is 1μF per phase.
Assuming a lossless line, determine the Line phase constant β, impedance ZC
and voltage regulation of the line.

4. A 3 phase transmission line has 3 wires arranged in a horizontal formation
having a conductor phase clearance of 1.5m. If each conductor has an area of
300mm2 and are transposed in the network, calculate the inductance of each
conductor.
5. A 200 km transmission line from Suswa to Nairobi has a resistance-10mΩ/km,
Inductive reactance - 0.3 Ω/km and Capacitive shunt admittance - 3*10-6 S/km
per phase respectively. If the line delivers 300 MW of power at 220 kV and 0.9
p.f lagging.
a) Assuming nominal π medium transmission line model, determine the sending
end voltage and current.
b) Calculate the sending end voltage, voltage regulation (VR) and efficiency of the
transmission line.
