P, Pi, Pid Controllers

Controllers are used to control the transient and steady state performance of a system according to requirements. There are several types of controllers: proportional (P), derivative (D), integral (I), PD, PI, and PID. A PID controller improves both the transient and steady state response by reducing rise time, increasing bandwidth, increasing stability, and eliminating steady state error. It does this by increasing the type and order of the system.

Controllers

➢A controller is a device which is used to control transient and steady

state performance as per the requirement.

➢Best system demands

1. Less settling time

2. Less overshoot
3. Less rise time
4. Smallest steady state error
1. Proportional controller

➢To change the transient response as per the requirement.

➢We cannot eliminate complete error in the p controller

➢TF of proportional controller is kp

Effect:

1. Natural frequency of oscillation increases by

2. Damping ratio decreases by

3. Peak overshoot increases

4. Steady state error reduces

2. Derivative control
Effect

1. Type and order of system reduces by one

2. Oscillations has died out, hence transient response improves

3. Not used in isolation

3. Integral controller
Effect

1. It increases type and order by one

2. Makes the system lesser stable

3. Steady state error reduces

4. It improves the steady state response

4. PD controller
Effect

1. Transient response improves

2. Damping ratio increases

3. Peak overshoot decreases

4. Bandwidth increases

5. Noise level increases

6. Improves gain margin, phase margin and resonant peak

5. PI controller
5. PI controller

Effect

1. Improves steady state response

2. Improves type and order of system by one

3. Noise level reduces

4. Increase error constant

5. Bandwidth reduces
6. PID controller

It is similar to lead-lag compensator and band reject filter

Effect

1. It improves both steady state as well as transient response

2. It reduces rise time

3. It increases bandwidth

4. It increases stability

5. It eliminates steady state error

6. It increases type and order of system by one
