Focal Length of A Convex Mirror Using Convex Lens 1
Focal Length of A Convex Mirror Using Convex Lens 1
RAY DIAGRAM:-
PROCEDURE:-
1. A convex mirror M, a convex lens L and an object needle O are mounted in the three
uprights and placed on the optical bench in such a way that the reflecting surface of
mirror is towards the lens.
2. The optical needle was placed at a distance of 1.5 times the rough focal length of lens.
3. A mirror was clamped in the middle of the needle and lens and was moved towards
the ‘O’, where the needle was mounted.
4. The inverted image of the object needle was obtained and eye was kept in such a
position where the tip of the inverted image and object needle were seen
simultaneously.
5. Now the image needle was mounted in front of the lens and its image was obtained
such that its tip touched the tip of inverted image without any parallax.
6. The index correction for distance between pole of convex mirror and the tip of the
image was formed.
7. The object needle was moved upright away from the lens by 2 cm to get the
observation.

CALCULATION:-
The mean value of focal length is 121.225/6 = 20.20 cm.
PRECAUTION:-
1. The tip of needle, centre of mirror and centre of lens should be of same height.
2. Parallax should be removed by observing the point of contact through different angles.
3. All the uprights should be vertical.
SOURCES OF ERROR:-
1. Focal length of lens may not be small.
2. Parallax removal may not be perfect.
