Eex5453 Lab01 2020-2021

The document describes three experiments on rectifier circuits using PSIM software. Experiment 1 involves simulating a full-wave uncontrolled rectifier and observing the output voltage. Experiments 2 and 3 involve simulating half-wave and full-wave controlled rectifiers with resistive loads and measuring voltage and current values at different firing angles/sequences. Post-lab exercises extend the simulations to include RL loads and propose a three-phase full-wave controlled rectifier simulation.

Lab 1 - Rectifiers
Report Due Date:

Experiment 1 – Full Wave Uncontrolled Rectifier / PSIM Introduction

I. Open the PSIM software from Start > Program > PSIM.

II. Create a new PSIM schematic under the menu, File > New.

III. An empty schematic entry will appear as in Figure 1.

Figure 1 – PSIM Initial Interface

1
Figure 2

IV. Connect the circuit as shown in Figure 2 using demo version of PSIM software.

V. Select a component from the “Elements” Toolbox.

VI. Place the component in the schematic entry. Right click to rotate the component. Press
Esc to exit from the selection.

VII. Connect the components using wire by clicking this icon.

VIII. Run the simulation by selecting “Run Simulation” icon.

IX. A window will appear automatically to show result screen after simulation is completed.
add the waveforms of Vs and Vo to the window using the appeared window.

X. Add another screen to the window by clicking icon.

XI. Add waveforms IL and Is to the new screen using icon.

XII. Add another screen by repeating 1.10 step and add IR and IC waveforms.

2
Now you should obtain a screen as shown in Figure 3. The result is plotted from zero to 0.5s.
In this circuit transient occurs at the beginning of simulation and reaches steady value

Figure 3

Observe the output voltage and comment on the reasons for the differences you noticed in the
output voltages.

Measuring rms, average, min & max

I. To measure rms, average, min & max values of the signals, use axis setting icon
to show the steady period of the waveform. All measurement must be performed at steady-
state period of the simulation. It is very useful to show a complete cycle of waveform when
detail measurement is required such as in FFT analysis. 3-5 cycles are preferred in most
application. To return to the total simulation result, click on the Re-draw icon.

II. Click on the measurement icon to activate measurement tools. Use one of these
icons to measure average, rms, max, or min value of the steady-state waveform.

3
III. From the waveforms in simulation results, record the following values:
i. Rms value of Vs and Is.
ii. Average value of Vo, IL and IR.
iii. Peak value of Is.

Experiment 2 – Single phase half-wave (controlled) rectifier with resistive load.

I. Assemble the single-phase half-wave diode rectifier circuit as shown in Figure 4.

Resistive load is 22 Ohm and a supply voltage of 24V.
