Activity 1: Comprehensive Exercise


Instructions:
1. Your lecturer will give out worksheet for you to fill in the answers.
2. You will be asked by your lecturer to work in pairs.
3. Answer all the questions within 25 minutes.
4. Discuss the answers with the class.

Question 1: What is a “Supply Chain”? (5 minutes)

Answer: A chain of operations/activities/business processes from the beginning till the end of a
product or service to meet customer satisfaction effectively in efficient manner

Question 2: What are the key components of a supply chain? (10 minutes)

Answer: (1) Business Processes: demand management, procurement, manufacturing


flow management, customer service and relationship management, product
development and commercialization, reverse logistics
(2) Inputs and outputs: raw materials, work-in-process, finished goods
(3) Players: suppliers, producers, distributors/wholesalers, retailers, customers
(4) Flows: material goods flow, information flow, financial flow
(5) Locations: domestics, international, global

Question 3: How many types of products are there in supply chain? What are their characteristics
and how do these product characteristics determine different types of supply chain
strategy? (10 minutes)

Answer: There are 2 types of products in supply chain: functional products and innovative
products. These 2 types of products determines 2 types of supply chain strategy as
described as follow:

1. Functional products. Its demand is rather predictable due to the low product
variety and high production volume as well as low rate of new product
development cycle. Hence, this product’s supply chain focuses on COST
leadership, resulting in pursuing a LEAN supply chain strategy.
2. Innovative products. Its demand is very difficult to predict due to the high
product variety and low production volume as well as high rate of new product
development cycle. Hence, this product’s supply chain focuses on SPEED,
resulting in pursuing a QUICK RESPONSE supply chain strategy.

Activity 2: Case Study of Cadbury’s Supply Chain


Instructions:
1. This activity would allow you to understand how a supply chain looks like in reality.
2. Your lecturer will give out worksheet for you to fill in the answers.
3. You will be asked by your lecturer to work in pairs.
4. You will first watch a series of videos that describe the supply chain of a chocolate bar
branded Cadbury, a leading confectionary manufacturer in the world.
5. Watch the following videos and answer the given questions.
1. From cocoa beans to chocolate bars Part 1
2. From cocoa beans to chocolate bars Part 2
3. From cocoa beans to chocolate bars Part 3
6. Discuss the answers with the class.
7. Recommended amount of time to spend, 30 minutes for answering the question.
