General Information
 CAUTION 
The aftertreatment catalyst elements contained in the
aftertreatment system are made of brittle material. Do not
drop or strike the side of the aftertreatment system as
damage to the aftertreatment catalyst elements can result.

Due to the number of varying exhaust aftertreatment

applications, this procedure has been written to be generic.

Illustrations within this procedure will not represent all

applications.

The aftertreatment system is composed of four sections. These

sections are:
1. The aftertreatment diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC)
2. The aftertreatment diesel particulate filter (DPF)
3. The decomposition reactor tube
4. The selective catalytic reduction (SCR).

Preparatory Steps
 WARNING 
Batteries can emit explosive gases. To reduce the possibility of personal injury, always
ventilate the compartment before servicing the batteries. To reduce the possibility of
arcing, remove the negative (-) battery cable first and attach the negative (-) battery cable
last.

Allow for diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) to recirculate and depressurize after engine shut down and
prior to DEF system servicing. This can take up to 15 minutes. There is always a chance of
residual pressure being present. Open fittings slowly to allow any pressure to bleed off before
removing any connections.
Disconnect the batteries. See equipment manufacturer service information.
Clean the area with compressed air to remove any loose debris.
If equipped, remove the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) heat shield that attaches to
the DOC and SCR.
Draw an orientation reference line across each clamp and OEM mounting bracket on every
aftertreatment canister section from the inlet to the outlet. This will aid in lining up the clamps
and canisters to their original orientation during installation.
Disconnect the DEF pressure and return lines from the DEF dosing valve. See equipment
manufacturer service information.
Disconnect the aftertreatment interface harness from the OEM wiring harness connector.
Refer to Procedure 019-477 in Section 19. (/qs3/pubsys2/xml/en/procedures/564/564-019-
477.html)

 CAUTION 
Do not use an air tool to remove the V-band clamp nut. An
air tool will damage the threads. Apply thread lubricant to
the V-band clamp threads prior to nut removal.

Support the aftertreatment system.

Remove the clamps from the inlet and outlet of the

aftertreatment system.

Remove the straps or bolts securing the aftertreatment system

to the vehicle chassis and slowly remove the aftertreatment
system from the vehicle. See equipment manufacturer service
information.

Discard the gaskets.

 WARNING 

This component or assembly weighs greater than 23 kg

assistance or use appropriate lifting equipment to lift this
component or assembly.

 CAUTION 

Do not use an air tool to tighten the V-band clamps. An air

tool will damage the threads.

Note : To aid installation, it is acceptable to secure the

gasket to the joint using a thin piece of double sided
tape while aligning the canister.
Note : The aftertreatment system must be installed so
the aftertreatment diesel particulate filter differential
pressure sensor tubes slope downward to drain
condensation away from the differential pressure
sensor.

Note : Make sure the sensors and wiring harnesses are

not making contact with any other vehicle components
prior to tightening the clamps.
Support the aftertreatment system.

Install the straps or bolts that secure the aftertreatment system

to the vehicle chassis. See equipment manufacturer service
information.

Install a new gasket between the V-band clamp joints that have
been disconnected.

Align the system in the same orientation as marked previously.

Note : If a Torca™ clamp is replaced during service, be

sure to replace it with another Torca™ clamp. Do not
use a U-bolt as a replacement clamp. U-bolt clamps can
crush the tailpipe and make it difficult to remove the
aftertreatment system for future service.
Apply a coat of anti-seize compound, Part Number 3824879,
or equivalent, to the threads of the V-band clamp.

Install the DOC inlet clamp. Refer to Procedure 011-049 in

Section 11. (/qs3/pubsys2/xml/en/procedures/564/564-011-
049.html)

Install the SCR outlet clamp. Refer to Procedure 011-036 in

Section 11. (/qs3/pubsys2/xml/en/procedures/564/564-011-
036.html)

Tighten the straps or bolts securing the aftertreatment system

to the vehicle chassis. See equipment manufacturer service
information.
