SAICA Accredited Academic and Professional Programmes
Quality assurance processes over Academic programmes leading to the qualification as a Chartered Accountant [CA(SA)] and the Associate
General Accountant [AGA(SA)]
The South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) accredits certain academic programmes for purposes of the Chartered Accountant (SA) and
Associate General Accountant (SA) designations.
Programmes accredited by SAICA are offered by providers as listed below, programmes are accredited separately (e.g. B Comm and PGDA are separate
programmes). Fulltime and distance learning programmes offered by one institution are also considered to be separate programmes and are accredited separately.
SAICA’s accreditation is over and above

▪ Institutional Audits performed by the Higher Education Quality Council (HEQC);
▪ Programme accreditation granted by the HEQC (Council for High Education (CHE) is one of the three Quality Councils established in law); and
▪ Recognition of degrees registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF), which is awarded by SAQA.
By accrediting a programme, SAICA certifies that (extract from the Accreditation and Monitoring Framework):
“a) a provider has put in place the appropriate resources that, if utilised effectively, should enable it to deliver the programme at the required standards
and levels of quality; and
b) the programme meets SAICA’s requirements in terms of the standards of learning and teaching.
Accreditation of a programme is not an assurance that a provider is achieving the required standard of delivery of that programme. Rather, accreditation
certifies that a programme contains the requirements necessary to meet SAICA’s accreditation standards.”
An essential element of accreditation is quality assurance and enhancement. Accreditation of programmes consists of initial accreditation and ongoing monitoring.
Accredited programmes are offered by public and private higher education institutions.

As from 2023, all programmes that achieve the status “accredited” will be listed here. Programmes may also be listed under the heading “Accredited, subject to
meeting SAICA requirements”. For these programmes SAICA may have concerns regarding whether the programme meets, to an appropriate extent, the education
and other requirements for accreditation. In such cases the programme will continued to be accredited provided that the provider takes immediate steps to respond
to the deficiencies in the programme.
Students wishing to pursue the CA(SA) or AGA(SA) designations must ensure that the programme they are enrolled for corresponds to the below list (you can
use the SAQA ID to check).

In order to be admitted to the Initial Test of Competence (ITC), candidates are required to have successfully completed a SAICA accredited
postgraduate qualification. In addition, candidates are also required to have passed all required modules in one academic period.
