BOSS (Bharat Operating System Solutions) is a Linux distribution developed in India based on Debian. It was created in 2006 by C-DAC to promote free and open source software in India. BOSS has an upgraded desktop environment that supports local Indian languages. • BOSS Operating System, also known as Bharat Operating System Solution, is a GNU/Linux
distribution that is derived from Debian Linux.

• This distribution was developed in India by the Centre for Development of Advanced
Computing (C-DAC), Chennai, in the year 20062006 for the enhancement of Free/Open source
software used throughout the entire nation.

• The National Resource Centre for Free and Open Source Software (NRCFOSS) is the key provider
of BOSS GNU/Linux OS. It has an upgraded desktop environment that supports local Indian
languages.

Versions are first is 1.0 (Tarag) released in January 2006 and present version is 9.9.0 (Urja)
released in February 2021.

Installation process of BOSS

1. Back up any existing data or documents on the hard disk where you plan to install.

2. Gather information about your computer and any needed documentation, before starting the
installation.

3. Create partition-table space for BOSS on your hard disk.

4. Set up the first boot drive to DVD drive (through CMOS setup) and restart your system.

5. Insert the BOSS GNU/Linux DVD into the drive

6. Boot the installation system.

7. Select installation language.

8. Activate the ethernet network connection, if available.

9. Create and mount the partitions on which BOSS GNU/Linux will be installed. Watch the
automatic install/setup of the base system.

10. Installs additional software (tasks and/or packages), at your discretion.

11. Installs a boot loader which can start up BOSS GNU/Linux on your existing system.

12. Load the newly installed system for the first time, and make some initial system settings.

13. If you have problems during the installation, it helps to know which packages are involved in
which steps.
Dual Boot with Windows 10 and Ubuntu

1. If necessary: Install Windows 10

2. Check if the system has UEFI

(Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) is a specification for a software program that connects a
computer's firmware to its operating system (OS).)

1. Prepare partition or hard disk for Ubuntu

2. Create bootable USB stick with ISO file for Ubuntu

3. Boot from the USB stick

4. Install Ubuntu next to Windows

5. Select which operating system to boot in the start menu

How to dual boot Windows

1. Install a new hard drive, or create a new partition on the existing one using the Windows
Disk Management Utility.

2. Plug in the USB stick containing the new version of Windows, then reboot the PC.

3. Install Windows 10, being sure to select the Custom option.

4. Select the newly created partition or the other hard disk as the destination for Windows 10.
Then click Next to install the operating system.
