Answer Key Formative Unit 3 Lines and Equations AC 1

The document provides a formative practice assessment on lines and equations with 9 multiple choice questions. The questions cover topics such as finding the gradient and y-intercept of lines, plotting points, writing equations of lines given points, rearranging equations in slope-intercept form, finding x-intercepts and y-intercepts, solving systems of equations graphically and algebraically through substitution and elimination, and determining if given points lie on a line. Unit 3 Lines and Equations Summative Assessment (Crit.

A & C)
Formative Practice Questions

Learning Objectives:
1. To plot linear equations from a table and understand the linear relationship between two variables
2. To find the gradient or slope of a line
3. To find the axes intercepts of a line
4. To use the form y = mx+ c to describe a straight line
5. To recognise the equation of a straight line from its graph
6. To identify and use the equations of horizontal and vertical lines
7. To graph a line from its equation y = mx+ c
8. To solve simultaneous equations in two unknowns graphically and know the method’s limitations
9. To solve simultaneous equations by the substitution and elimination methods
10. To apply methods of solving simultaneous equations to solving worded problems

Questions:

Q1. Write down the gradient and y intercept of the following lines:
(a) 𝑦 = 2𝑥 − 1
m = 2, y-int = -1
(b) 𝑦 = 𝑥 − 1
m = 1, y-int = -1
(c) 𝑦 = 2 − 3𝑥
m = -3, y-int = 2

Q2. Complete the following table:

(a) Write down a point that lies in the 1st (2,5)

quadrant

(b) Write down a point that lies in the 3rd (-4, -11)
quadrant

(c) Write down a point that lies on the x-axis (15, 0)

Q3 Find the equation of line AB if A and B are the points (0, 6) and (3, 0)

y-int = 6 since the line passes through (0,6)

0−6 −6
𝑚= 3−0
= 3
=− 2
∴ the equation of AB is y = -2x + 6
Q4. Find out the equation following 3 lines:

Red (Top): y = 3
Green (Middle): y = -x + 3
1
Blue (Bottom): y = 2
𝑥−2

Q5. Consider the line 2𝑥 + 3𝑦 = 5:

a) rearrange the equation to slope-intercept form by making y the subject
b) find the y-intercept
c) find the x-intercept

a) 3y = -2x + 5
2 5
y=− 3
𝑥+ 3
b) x = 0
5 5
y=0+ 3
= 3
c) y =0
2x + 0 = 5 (the original equation)
5
x= 2

Q6. Solve the system of equations by substitution. You also need to simplify your answer to
the simplest form.
Eq.2 x 2:
2x + 2y = -16

Eq.1 + Eq.2 x 2:
5x + 0 = -10
x = -2
Sub x = -2 into Eq. 2
-2 + y = -8
y = -6

∴ (-2, -6) is the solution.

Q7. Show that each of these points lies on the line 𝑦 = 2 − 5𝑥.

a) A(0, 2)
b) B(5, -23)
c) C(2k-1, 7-10k)

a) when x = 0, y = 2 - 5(0) = 2, ∴ (0, 2) is on the line

b) when x = 5, y = 2 - 5(5) = 2 - 25 = -23, ∴ (5, -23) is also on the line
c) when x = 2k-1,
y = 2 - 5(2k-1)
= 2 - 10k + 5
= 7 - 10k
∴ (2k-1, 7-10k) does lie on the line

Q8. Solve the system of equations and leave your answer in the simplest form:

Simplify the two equations first:

Eq1: x + 2 + 3 = 3(y-x)
x + 5 = 3y - 3x
4x - 3y = 5 … (1)

Eq2: 3x - 3 + y = 1
3x + y = 4 … (2)

From (2) y = 4 - 3x
Sub that into (1)
4x - 3(4-3x) = 5
4x - 12 + 9x = 5
13x = 17
17
x= 13
17 52−51 1
∴ y = 4 - 3( 13 )= 13
= 13
17 1
∴ ( 13 , 13
) 𝑖𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛

[extra] Q9. Find the equation of the line that passes through (2, 5) and (-4, 7)

Let the equation be y = mx + b

Since (2, 5) is on the line, 5 = 2m + b …. (1)

Since (-4, 7) is on the line, 7 = -4m + b …. (2)

(2) - (1) elimination method

2 = -6m
1
m=- 3
Sub that into (1)
1 2
5 = 2(- 3 ) + b, b = 5 3
1 2
∴ the equation is y = - 3
x+53
