Introduction:

Warna dam, the second largest dam in the ghat region of Sangli's Shirala tehsil.
The dam has a capacity of 34.40 TMC and is among the few large-sized earthen dams in the
state. The water from the dam is used for irrigation and is released into the Warna river, a
major tributary of the Krishna river..Chandoli National Park receives heavy rainfall up to 4764
mm per annum. Even though, the park area faces the problem of scarcity of water mostly
during the summer season.
I had the opportunity to visit Chandoli Dam on 8 October 2023. As a Part of ISE
for Irrigation and Hydraulic structure. Chandoli dam is a type of earthen dam which is built on
Varna River and from both sides canals are constructed. The total Gross area of dam is 87,000
Hectares (19,350 hect. for agricultural areas). It supplies water for almost 8 nearby Talukas
and 201 villages.

Chandoli Dam

Chandoli Dam, a key water reservoir in the region, holds paramount importance
in water resource management and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding natural
beauty. The purpose of this visit was to assess the dam's infrastructure, operational status,
and to gain insights into its significance for the local ecosystem and communities.

❖ Purpose of Chandoli dam :

The Chandoli Dam, located in Malewadi, Maharashtra, holds significant importance for the
nearby area due to its multifaceted contributions. Here are some key aspects highlighting the
importance of Chandoli Dam for the surrounding region:

● Water Supply for Agriculture:

Chandoli Dam serves as a vital water reservoir for agricultural activities in the region. The
stored water is used for irrigation, supporting the cultivation of crops and enhancing
agricultural productivity.

● Drinking Water Source:

The dam plays a crucial role in providing a reliable source of drinking water for nearby
communities. It ensures access to clean and potable water for local residents, contributing to
public health and well-being.
● Hydropower Generation:
Chandoli Dam likely contributes to hydropower generation, harnessing the energy of flowing
water to produce electricity.

● Flood Control:
The dam helps in mitigating the impact of floods by regulating the flow of water in the
catchment area. This is particularly important for safeguarding nearby areas from potential
flood-related damage during heavy rainfall seasons.

❖ Observation on Chandoli Dam :

The Chandoli dam we visited is situated on Varna River at

Malewadi, Kolhapur. These are Earthen type of dam having 4 spillways and 2 canals from
outside. Firstly, we went to the crest level of a dam where concrete road is constructed to
inspection on dam.
Also at toe level 3 opening from dam is situated by which water was
can release for usage to near by villages, this dam is almost full filled so it can save the water
at its upstream side so it can be used to generation electricity, irrigation and at for summer
vacation storage of water required. Here we observe the upstream side of dam called
VasantSagar water. Here 2 sluice ways are provided to pass the water forward through canals
to nearby villages and to control the water.
So far from dam the concreted 4 spillways are there to open the
doors of spillways when dam completely filled with water so it can prevent the damage. Also,
at upstream side we can observe the free board of water level is also provided. Conduits are
pipe structures that act as passage for water supply at bottom discharge crossing the body of
dam from upstream to downstream sides enabling water flow.
Also at crest level we observed the revolving steel gates to control
flow of water through sluice way. Here due to it is earthen dam seepage of water is
continuously flowing through pores. At the level of dam there is Hydroelectric generation
mechanics was established by which from dam through sluice way water is passed towards
the electric plant by which turbine rotates and electricity can be generated.
Also abutments support the lateral pressure. These are sides of
valley. These are concrete or masonry structures, The cut-off an impervious barrier
construction beneath the earthen dams to reduce loss of stored water reservoir by preventing
seepage. The Parapet wall is seen below the crest near the roadways, This assists in the dam
investigation and safety barriers. Also we can’t see the galleries but as per faculty refers, it is a
hollow opening passing through the dam to collect seepage water from the foundation and
body of the dam and drain it out.

❖ Conclusion
This educational site visit to the Chandoli dam is very
informative which gives the detailed information about the dam and and its each components
function .Chandoli Dam in Maharashtra helps farmers by providing water for crops and gives clean
water to nearby villages. It also stops floods and is a nice place for tourists to visit. The dam is near
a national park, showing how people can use nature while protecting it. Overall, Chandoli Dam is
important for water, tourism, and taking care of the environment.
