Name: Avram Ionuț Date: the 6th of November 2023 Grade: 9th Level: pre-intermediate (L1) Number of students: 30 Lesson: How to teach pro ecological attitudes effectively Language focus: Recycling and its significance Time: 50 minutes Type of lesson: Mixed lesson Methods and techniques: individual work Skills developed: listening, speaking, writing, reading Objectives: At the end of the lesson students will be able to: Understand the importance of ecology; Appreciate the natural environment; use various ways to protect the environment and recyle waste; Students will improve their speaking skills related to recycling and environmental topics. Students will expand their vocabulary related to recycling. Students will gain a deeper understanding of the importance of recycling. Description of the class Pre-intermediate students around the age of 15, they are generally enthusiastic, really enjoying group work or pair work. Recent work Students have been studying vocabulary related the natural environment (mountain, forest, wood, valley, hill, swamp) followed by language practice; Students have been given homework- to describe their environment, particularly their hometown / village, their home Materials: 1. Visual aids (pictures or posters related to recycling and the environment) 2. A list of recyclable and non-recyclable items. 3. Small cards with discussion topics. 4. computer, projector, flip chart, notebooks, worksheets. Procedure: Introduction (10 minutes): 1. Start by displaying visual aids related to recycling and the environment (see appendix 1). Discuss the images and elicit vocabulary related to recycling and environmental issues. 2. Briefly introduce the topic of recycling, its importance, and the benefits it offers to the environment. Activity 1 - Vocabulary Building (15 minutes): 3. Provide a list of recyclable and non-recyclable items (see appendix 2). Review the list together, explaining what each item is. 4. Divide the class into pairs or small groups. Give each group a set of the items on small cards (one card per item). 5. Instruct the groups to categorize the items into recyclable and non- recyclable piles. 6. After the activity, have each group share their results with the class, discussing their reasoning behind the categorization. Activity 2 - Group Discussion (10 minutes): 7. Prepare a list of discussion topics related to recycling and the environment on separate cards. For example: "What are some simple ways to reduce waste at home?", "Do you think recycling is an individual's responsibility or a government's duty?", or "What are the environmental consequences of not recycling?" 8. Distribute the discussion topic cards to the groups. Each group should choose a card and discuss the topic among themselves. 9. After the group discussions, have a spokesperson from each group summarize their discussion for the class. Activity 3 - Role Play (10 minutes): 10. Divide the class into pairs. Assign roles: one student is a concerned citizen, and the other is a city official responsible for waste management. 11.Provide a scenario: the concerned citizen wants to propose a recycling program in their city, and the city official needs to listen and respond to their suggestions. 12.Each pair should engage in a role-play conversation. Encourage students to use the vocabulary and ideas discussed earlier in the lesson. Conclusion (5 minutes): 13. Wrap up the lesson by summarizing the key points discussed during the activities. Highlight the importance of recycling and its positive impact on the environment. Homework (optional): Assign students to research and prepare a short presentation on a specific recycling project or initiative in their community or country. Assessment: Assess students based on their active participation in group discussions, role-play conversations, and their ability to use vocabulary related to recycling effectively. Evaluate their understanding of the environmental issues and solutions discussed during the lesson.
