Eet 4217 Lab1

This laboratory focused on familiarizing students with induction motor drive systems through hands-on experiments. Students controlled an induction motor using three methods: auxiliary control with a potentiometer and switches, local control via the drive's man-machine interface, and programming control through a computer interface. Key activities included setting the motor speed via potentiometer, reversing direction with switches, monitoring operational parameters on the interface display, and programming and extracting parameters using dedicated software. The objectives were to experience different control modes of AC drive systems and understand induction motor control mechanisms.

RAJARATA UNIVERSITY OF SRI LANKA

Batch : 2016/2017 Degree : BET (Hons)

Session : Module Title : Machines & Drives

Module Code : EET 4217 Laboratory : Physics Lab

Practical No : P1
Practical Title : Familiarize with Induction (AC) Drive Systems
Practical Code : EET 4217.P1

Coordinator : W.R. Eranda Facilitator(s) : J.D.Chathurang, M.R.D.P.Thilakaratne, Manoj Hirantha

Introduction:
This laboratory is focused on familiarizing with the induction drive system operation, induction
motor controlling mechanisms, and control modes. The controlling and operating of the drive will
be performed under the categories of auxiliary control, Man Machine Interface based control, and
Software based control.

Educational Objectives:

• Studying t h e i n d u c t i o n m o t o r c o n t r o l m e c h a n i s m s .
• Use of controlling modes in AC drive systems.

Experimental Objectives:

• Control the induction motor under auxiliary control of the drive.

• Control the induction motor under the Man Machine Interface (MMI) of the drive.
• Control the induction motor using the software through the RS 232 interface.

Safety Precautions:
1. Always turn off the power to the drive system when changing the circuit.
2. Only reapply power after verifying that the circuit is properly wired by the lab
instructor.

Pre-Lab:
1. Study the basics of v/f controlling of an induction machine.

Equipment Needed:
• TERCO AC Motor Drive MV 4206
• TERCO Induction Motor 4008
• Analog Volt Meter

Procedure:
Pre Settings
• Short circuit the Thermistor terminals to override the safety settings as no thermistor
will be used in this experiment.

• Supply 24V external trip terminal to deactivate the external trip.

• Supply power to the induction motor through the VFD in Star configuration.
Part A: Auxiliary control

In Fig.1 below, basic connections for auxiliary control can be seen. This mode simply controls the speed
of the motor, when turning the potentiometer P1. The switch S1 is used as run switch and the switch S2
is used as a directional switch. Connect the cables according to the wiring configuration given below

1. Connect +10V to Potentiometer P1: right connection.

2. Connect 0V to Potentiometer P1: left connection.
3. Connect AIN1 (SPEED SETPOINT) to Potentiometer P1: middle connection.
4. Bypass the external THERMISTOR (bypasses external temperature sensor).
5. Connect +24V to DIN8 (EXT TRIP).
6. Connect +24V to Switch S1 and S2 left side.
7. Connect the right side of Switch S1 to DIN1 (RUN FORWARD).
8. Connect the right side of Switch S2 to DIN4 (REMOTE REVERSE).

• Run the motor in forward mode and increase the set point gradually using the potentiometer.
• Obtain the following parameters for the set point 50% and 60% .
Set Point Motor Line to Line V Frequency supplied Calculated v/f ratio
by the drive

• Demonstrate the remote control action by using S2 to reverse the motor direction using Remote
Reverse.

Part B: Man Machine Interface (MMI) based operation and control

During this performance we will perform local operation of the AC machine by means of the MMI.
While operating the machine, the different operational data will also be studied in the MMI
OPERATOR sub-menu while essential parameters are configured.

The most essential parts of the menu system concerning local operation can be studied below:

Voltage by the drive

• Reverse the motor direction using the MMI

• Test the JOG operation.
Part 3 : Using DSE Lite GUI for controlling, Operation and Programming.
• Change the drive mode to RS 232
• Connect the RS 232 to the PC and Run the DSE Lite
• Make sure the correct com port is selected.
• Connect Auxiliary wiring according to Fig 1.

• Open the Default Programme T5.690 (File-New-690p-ver5)

• Turn On the Drive
• Establish the connection between drive and GUI using ( Command-Online )
• Set the motor parameters using motor data in parameters.
• Enable the Auto tune in Parameters.
• Turn On the S1 switch.
• Be patient until the drive calibrates the motor.

• Then exact the Drive Parameters to the default program using (Command – Extract
Drive Parameters)
• Motor Controlling (In Parameters – sequential logic)
o Make the Drive Enable (276) in sequential logic to run the motor using GUI.
o Demonstrate the Forward Run.
o Demonstrate the Backward Run
• Set the speed set point 50% and 60% using the (Analog input – Offset)

• Obtain the parameters using chart and monitor functions. Record the screenshots.
Discussion:
1. Explain the theoretical and technical aspects of v/f controlling.
2. Discuss the technical advantages of using a VFD over other conventional motor control
mechanisms.
Report:
The report should be included with observations, results, and discussions. It can be either
handwritten or typed.
