MAT 102 - TEST PREP

Instructions

Please use these questions to prepare for the test. In addition to these problems, work on as many of
the “Week n Problems” as possible. (You can find these problems posted in the corresponding weekly
guides on the course page.)

Remember, you must fully explain/justify your answers to all questions in this course, unless otherwise
instructed!

Assigned Questions

(1) Find all s ∈ R so that x2 − sx + s = 0 has two real solutions.

2
(2) Prove that for all x, y ∈ R, we have 8xy 3 ≤ 2x + y 3 .

(3) Let f : R → R be defined by f (x) = 5x3 − 7x − 10. Prove that if |x| ≤ 3, then |f (x)| ≤ 166.

(4) Let A, B, C be subsets of a universal set U .

Determine if the following statements are true or false. If true, prove them. If false, find
a counterexample.

(a) A ∩ (B \ C) = (A \ B) ∩ (A \ C)

(b) If Ac ⊆ B c , then A ⊂ B.

(c) (A ∩ B) ∪ C = (A ∪ C) ∩ (B ∪ C).

(5) Let F = {0, 1, x, y, z} be a field with 5 elements. Given that x · y = 1, find x · z.

(6) Is the set F = Z ∪ ± 2n |n∈N a field? (Using the usual addition and multiplication of
numbers.)

(7) Which of the following are mathematical statements?

(a) x2 + 5x + 1 = 0.

(b) Messi > Ronaldo.

(c) Every integer is positive.

(d) Z ⊆ N.

(e) x < y + x2 .

(f) CATS!!!!!

(8) Let P, Q be mathematical statements. Find the truth tables of the following statements.

(a) (¬P ∨ Q) =⇒ (¬P ∧ Q).

(b) (P ∧ ¬Q) ∨ (P ∧ Q).

MAT 102 - TEST PREP
(9) Let P, Q, R be mathematical statements. Negate the following statements.

(a) (¬P ∨ Q) =⇒ (P ∧ ¬Q).

(b) (P =⇒ Q) ∧ R.

(10) Let P, Q, R be mathematical statements. Consider the statement (P ∨ Q) =⇒ (R ∧ Q).

(a) Find its contrapositive.

(b) Given that this statement is false, and that Q is true, find all possible truth values for
P, R.

(11) Let P be the statement:

“For all a, b ∈ Z, if a + b is divisible by 10, then a is divisible by 10 and b is divisible by

10.”

(a) Express P using logic symbols, denoting the set of all multiples of ten by T .

(b) Find ¬P , in both logic symbols and in english.

(c) Find the contrapositive of P .

(d) One of P or ¬P is true. Determine which one, and justify your answer.

(12) (a) Prove that if x ∈ Z and x2 is even, then x is even.

(b) State and prove an analogous statement to (a) about odd numbers.

(13) Prove that the equation x2 + 3y 2 = 2 has no integer solutions.

(14) Let E denote the set of even integers, O denote the set of odd integers, and x, y ∈ Z be any
integers.

Prove that if x + y ∈ E, then either x, y ∈ E or x, y ∈ O.

Try to find as many proofs as possible: does a direct proof work? Contrapositive? Con-
tradiction?

(15) Let a, b ∈ Z. Prove that if a is divisible by 4 and b is divisible by 4, then:

(a) a · b is divisble by 16.

(b) a − b is divisible by 4.

(c) Is the converse of either part true or false? Justify your answer.
