Arc Length

This document presents information about calculating the arc length of curves. It provides formulas for calculating arc length for both simple functions and parametric functions. It also includes proofs of these formulas using Pythagorean theorem and definitions of arc length. Finally, it discusses applications of arc length in fields like physics, engineering, and mathematics such as measuring curved objects.

Arc Length of a Curve:-

For Simple Function Given

The arc length of a curve is the distance traveled along the curve between two points.
It is typically calculated using calculus, specifically by integrating the magnitude of the curve's derivative
over the interval of interest.
For a curve represented by the function y = f(x) over the interval [a, b], the arc length formula is:

" #$
L= ∫! (1 + 〖 #% 〗^2) 𝑑𝑥

where dy/dx represents the derivative of f(x).

PROVE:-
By Pythagoras Theorem
(dl)2 = (dx)2 + (dy)2
√(dl)2 = √(dx)2 + (dy)2
(dl) = √(dx)2 + (dy)2

"
Arc Length = ∫! 𝑑𝑙

"
= ∫! 𝑑𝑥 # + 𝑑𝑦 #

" $%
= ∫! 𝑑𝑥 # (1 + 〖 $& 〗^2)

" $%
= ∫! (1 + 〖 $& 〗^2) 𝑑𝑥

For Parametric Function

The arc length formula can also be applied to curves represented by parametric functions.
For a curve parameterized by the function r(t) = (x(t), y(t)) over the interval [a, b], the arc length
formula is:

"
L= ∫! [𝑥′(𝑡)]# + [𝑦 $ 𝑡 ]# dt

where x'(t) and y'(t) represent the derivatives of x(t) and y(t), respectively.

PROVE:-
"
As arc Length = ∫! 𝑑𝑙 𝑑𝑡

"
= ∫! [𝑥′(𝑡)]& + [𝑦 ' 𝑡 ]& dt

" #% & #$ &

= ∫! ( #( ) +( #( ) dt

"
= ∫! 𝑟′(𝑡) 𝑑𝑡

Application
Arc length has various applications in physics, engineering, and
mathematics.
It is used to measure the length of curved objects, such as
wires, cables, and coastlines.
It also plays a role in calculating the surface area of surfaces of
revolution.
