Q.No. Questions
1 Neighboring rain gauge stations A, B, C, D, E and F have normal annual rainfalls of 610,
550, 468, 700, 563 and 382 mm respectively. During a storm, stations B, C, D, E and F
have reported rainfalls of 25, 30, 35, 15 and 25 mm respectively and station A did not
report as it was inoperative. Estimate the missing storm rainfall at A by the arithmetic
mean method, the normal ratio method and inverse distance method. The coordinates of
A, B, C, D, E and F are (0, 0), (4, 10), (-4, -5), (-12, 6), (6, -6) and (10, 2), respectively.
2 Annual rainfall of station A and the average annual rainfall of five surrounding stations
from 2010 to 1996 are given below. Check the consistency of data of station A. If data is
found inconsistent, then correct the inconsistent data.

3 Describe the procedure for finding average depth of rainfall through Isohyetal method. A
circle of diameter 40 km is a close approximation to a river basin. The position
coordinates of five rain gauge stations A, B, C, D and E located within the basin with
respect to coordinate axes system whose x- axis and origin are coincident with diameter
and centre of the circle are (0,0), (10,0), (0,10), (-10,0), and (0,-10) km respectively. If the
rainfall recorded at these rain gauges are 30, 45, 40, 25 and 20 cm respectively, determine
the average depth of rainfall using Arithmetic mean method and Thiessen polygon
method.
4 The catchment area of a basin may be approximated by a semi circle of radius r Km with
respect to coordinate axis setup with its origin at the centre of the circle and X - axis
coincident with the diameter, the area lies in the first and second quadrants and the
position coordinates of the rain gauge stations are (0, 0), (r/2,r/2) and (-r/2,r/2)Km.
Determine the Thiessen weights of the gauges.
5 Find the mean precipitation for the area shown in following Figure by Thiessen polygon
method. The area is composed of a square plus an equilateral triangular plot of side 2 km.
Rainfall readings are in cm at the various stations indicated.
6 Thiessen polygons and Isohyetal map are given in Fig. 1 and Fig 2, respectively, for
different drainage basins. Areas and precipitation values are tabulated. Compute the
average precipitation over the basins.

7 Define/ Explain:
(a) Probable maximum Precipitation and Probable maximum Flood
(b) Potential Evapo-transpiration
(c) IDF curve
(d) Hyetograph
(e) Horton Infiltration Equation
8 List the various factors affecting evaporation. An evaporation pan 1.2 in diameter, was
used to find out the evaporation from reservoir. The pan was initially filled with water to a
depth of 10cm. During the period of observation a rainfall of 5cm was recorded. To keep
the water level same in the pan an amount of water equal to 3cm depth had to be removed.
At the end of observation the depth of water in the pan was fond to be 10.5 cm. If the pan
coefficient is 0.70, estimate the evaporation from reservoir.
9 Define Φ-index and w-index. The rainfall intensity on three successive 6 hr periods are
1.2, 4.5 & 3.2 cm/hr. If the surface runoff resulting from this storm is 3.1 cm what is the
value of Φ-index for this storm?
10 For a catchment, the initial infiltration, capacity is 2.5 cm/hr, which assumes almost a
constant value of 0.5 cm/hr after 8 hours of rainfall. Estimate the total infiltration if
Horton’s constant K = 5 day-1.
11 List the factors affecting the infiltration. Sketch and explain the double ring infiltrometer.
