This document discusses how the Petrel 2007 software can be used to visualize drilling data in 3D geological models to help manage drilling risk and monitor operations. It allows evaluation of reservoir models during well planning, drilling, and post-drilling. Key capabilities include well path design, correlation of well logs, and real-time updating of well data during drilling. Connecting Petrel to real-time data sources like InterACT during drilling allows visualizing operational problems and updating the geological model in real time. Using Petrel during drilling can help reduce costs by improving planning, interpreting data more accurately, and evaluating risks better.

Using Petrel during Drilling 2007
Visualization of data in Petrel for drilling risk
management and operations surveillance applying knowledge of geosciences Petrel 2007
Petrel Seismic to Simulation
Software provides the necessary tools for visualization and interaction between a 3D geological model and drilling operations, integrating every area of geosciences in an improved core to cover from seismic to simulation Workflow
Petrel allows an efficient evaluation
of reservoir models during pre-drilling (Well design), operations (Real-Time updates) and/or post-drilling (revision, re design, etc) With Petrel Well design Module you can do…
• Well paths, sidetracks or multilaterals
design using seismic lines, 3D Petrophysical models, 2D reservoir maps drawn on simulation results, etc
• Well path reports on fault intersection,
well tops and synthetic logs
• Setting Dog leg severity range for
every designed path
• “Error Cones” on well paths to ensure
the correct position of drilling objectives
• Vertical well sections automatically
updated, while well paths are adjusted or updated
• Well visualization on seismic, faults,
well picks, properties, etc Petrel Well Correlation allows…
•Well logs visualization for correlation and
edition
•Well tops Creation, visualization and
edition
• Wells classification by stage (perforation,
production, injection, etc.)
• Visualization of Stratigraphic horizons,
faults, contacts etc.
• Well correlation, seismic and synthetics
• Discrete well logs creation by correlation
and interpretation as Facies, lithology, etc
• Design and edition of casing, perforation
marks, etc. (well completion design) Real Time Visualization
With the Petrel Real-Time link
(Petrel* 2007) is possible to update well logs, well paths and events during operation, using WITSML data sources such as e.g. InterACT*
The drilling surveillance trough
3D model gives a general image of earth in real time, allowing to know the geology of zone and identifying possible structural obstacles during operations.
Operative problems during
drilling, like mechanical or casing problems, can be visualized in Petrel. To connect to InterACT*, trough the Real-Time data link in Petrel* 2007, follow the next steps:
Rigth Click on a well
and select Connect to Real-Time data link Select the WITSML data source (in this case InterACT*) and access data to a personal account, previously created in: https://www.interact.slb.com/

•Working together, geoscientists and field
engineers, it’s possible to reduce planning or interpretation mistakes
• Having less engineers on well site (they are in
the office) gives some benefits of security, logistics and more efficient use of human resources
• Risk evaluation involving technical elements;
fundamental on viability analysis
•Facies modeling allows to know pore pressure
and fracture gradient in combination with 3D seismic analysis
•Right prediction of geomechanical risk, reduces
risk in perforation and allows a faster evaluation and re-planning of operation Using Petrel during Drilling 2007 - Advantages REDUCING TIME AND MONEY LOST:
•3D visualizations give a better
understanding of spatial relationships between wells and geological bodies (right decisions) .
•Operation Planning closer to execution
• Seismic interpretation together with real-
time data, gives a 3D geological model closer to reality
