Math10 - Q2 - Wk1 Illustrating Poly Function
MATHEMATICS 10
Solutions:
1
The expressions (a) 5x3 – 3x2 + 7, (c) 𝑥 5 + 3x 2 – 2 and (e) √5 x3 – 7x + 1 define polynomial
2
functions; while the expressions in letters (b), (d) and (f) do not. Observe that in (a), (c), and (e) all
1
exponents of x are non-negative integers. However, for (b) and (f), the exponents of x are -4 and 3, while
in (d) the variable x in the third term is inside the radical sign which is equivalent to an expression with
1
exponent 2.
The terms of a polynomial function may be written in any order. If it is written as:
P(x)= = an xn + an-1 xn-1+ an-2 xn-2.……+ a1 x + a0, the function is said to be in descending order; otherwise,
it is in ascending order.
Directions/Instructions
Read and follow the directions for each exercise carefully and correctly.
Activity 1
Determine whether each of the following is a polynomial expression or not. Give your reasons.
1. 14x 6. π
2. 5x3 - 4√2𝑥 + x 7. 3𝑥 √3 + √3𝑥 2 + 9x -2
3. -2014x 8. 𝑥 3 + 2x + 1
4. 3 1
𝑥 4 + 3𝑥 4 + 7 9. -4𝑥 −100 + 4x 100
5. 1 2 3 10 1-16x 2
+ -
2𝑥 3 3𝑥 4 4𝑥 5

Activity 2
Consider the given polynomial functions and fill in the table below
Activity 3
Use all the numbers in the box once as a coefficients or exponents to form as many polynomial functions
of x as you can. Write your polynomial functions in standard form.
√7 1
1 -2 2 - 3
4 6
The x-intercepts are -1, 2, and 3. This means the graph will pass through (-1,0), (2,0) and (3,0).
➢ Finding y-intercept is more straightforward. Simply set x=0 in the given polynomial. That is,
y= x3 – 4x2 + x +6
y= 03 – 4(0)2 + x +6
y=6
The y- intercept is 6. This means the graph will also pass through (0,6).
The x-intercepts are -6, -1, 0, 1, and 1. This means the graph will pass through (-6,0), (-1,0), (0,0), and
(1,0).
Again, finding the y-intercept simply requires us to set x=0 in the given polynomial. That is,
y= x4 + 6x3 – x2 -6x
y= (0)4 + 6(0)3 – (0)2 -6(0)
y=0
2
The y- intercept is 0. This means the graph will pass also through (0,0)
Activity 1
Factor each polynomial completely using any method. (2pts.each)
Activity 2
Determine the intercepts of the graphs of the following polynomial functions. (2pts each)
1. y= x3 +x2 -12x 4. y= -x4 +16
2. y= (x-2) (x-1) (x+3) 5. y= x5 + 10x3 – 9x
3. y= 2x4 + 8x3 + 4x2 -8x -6
Activity 3
Determine the x- intercept/s and y-intercept of each given polynomial function. To obtain other points on
the graph, find the value of y that corresponds to each value of x in the table. (10pts. Each)
x -6 -4 -0.5 3 5
y
List all your answers in the table as ordered pairs.
x -7 -3 1 2
y
x -4 -2 -0.5 2 4
