NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY ROURKELA – 769008

Department of Electronics & Communications Engineering

7th Semester B. Tech (EC)/1st Semester M.Tech(MWR)/PhD
End Semester Examination (Autumn) 2021
Subject Name: Microwave Devices & Circuits Subject Code: EC-6401
Maximum marks: 50 Time: 2 Hours
This question paper contains two pages.
Instructions: Figures in the right hand margin indicate marks. Answer any FIVE questions. All parts of a question
should be answered in one place.
1.(a) Compute the image impedance and propagation factor for the network shown below. [5×2]

(b) Design a composite low-pass filter by the image parameter method with the following
specification: R0=50 Ω, fC=50 MHz and f∞=52 MHz. Plot insertion loss versus frequency.

2. (a) Design a low pass maximally flat filter having a passband of 0 to 3 GHz, and an attenuation of 20 [5×2]
dB at 5 GHz. The characteristics impedance is 75 Ω. Plot insertion loss versus frequency.
[Choose: g1 =0.618, g2 = 1.618, g3= 2.0, g4 =1.618, g5 = 0.618]

(b) Design a four-section band pass filter having a maximally flat group delay response. The
bandwidth should be 5% with a center frequency of 2 GHz. The impedance is 50 Ω. Plot insertion
loss versus frequency.
[Choose: g1 =1.0598, g2 = 0.5116, g3=0.3181, g4 =0.1104]

3.(a) Discuss the design steps of a Rat-race coupler in brief using a schematic diagram. Derive the [5×2]
scattering parameters.
(b) Find the S-parameters for the series and shunt loads shown below. Show that S12 = 1-S11 for the
series case, and that S12 = 1+S11 for the shunt case. Assume a characteristic impedance of Z0.

4. (a) A four–port network has the scattering matrix shown below. If port 3 and 4 are connected with a [5×2]
lossless matched transmission line with an electrical length of 1000, find the resulting insertion
loss and phase between ports 1 and 2.

(b) Find the ABCD matrix for the circuit shown below.

5.(a) Find the cutoff frequencies of the first two propagating modes of a circular waveguide [5×2]
with a = 0.5 cm and ɛr = 2.25. If the guide is silver plated and the dielectric loss tangent
(tan δ) is 0.001. Calculate the k and ꞵ values for a 50 cm length of guide operating at 13

GHz. [Choose: X 01=3.832, X 11 =1.841, X01 =2.405, X11= 3.832]

(b) In an H-plane T-junction, compute power delivered to the loads 40 Ω and 60 Ω connected
to arms 1 and 2 when 10mW power is delivered to matched port 3.

6.(a) A lossless transmission line is terminated with a 100 Ω load. If the SWR on the line is 1.5, find the [5×2]
two possible values for the characteristics impedance of the line.

(b) A 75 Ω coaxial transmission line has a length of 2.0 cm and is terminated with a load impedance
of 37.5+j75 Ω. If the dielectric constant of the line is 2.56 and the frequency is 3.0 GHz , find the
input impedance to the line, the reflection coefficient at the load, the reflection coefficient at the
input, and the SWR on the line.

All the Best!
