Testing the effects of various fertilizers

Instructions: Use the lab example provided to complete the Practice Writing a Lab Report
activity. Please fill in this lab report with the appropriate information and data.

Answering your comments:

“The instructions can be deleted in the final report.” - I just wanted to keep it in as this is a practice lab report and
those are the instructions.
“You have not created a title that would represent the purpose of the experiment = 1 point off. (I know purpose of
this lab report was practicing writing, but this title doesn’t reflect the purpose of the experiment.)
Try to be creative!” – I didn’t find anything saying that I had to create my own title. It is called Practice Writing a
Lab Report because you are practicing on a already partially done lab report that is supposed to evaluate your
skills in writing lab reports. I wasn’t supposed to write a title that does reflect the purpose of the experiment, cause
of it’s unimportance.
“It was not required but it would be better for your future reference to include the procedure steps in the lab report.
Just a suggestion.“ – I know they are a good thing to include but I was given simple information that I don’t need to
include it there.
“The table is good to have, but a common practice in lab reports includes also data visualization. You could have
created a plot of the observed data that would help to better demonstrate the results. Consider including also a plot
next time.” – Again. I wasn’t instructed to do so. There are 100+ things that could be included in this lab report.
“Your conclusion should be based on specific observation = it would be convenient to add the final results of the
data analysis in your conclusion. This is the reason I had to take 1 point off.” – I know it would be convenient but
again I did exactly what I was instructed to do. Therefore I did everything right.

Title:
Jan Pokorný, Pavlína Cicková, Testing the effects of various fertilizers

Objective(s):
What is the purpose of the lab?
The objective is to test the effects of organic and chemical fertilizers on plant growth.
Hypothesis:
What was the hypothesis in the experiment? The hypothesis should make a prediction of the
outcome of your experiment and should include an explanation of why you expect that outcome.
Organic fertilizer would make the plants grow taller.
Variables:
 Independent Variable: fertilizers
 Dependent Variable: growth of the plants
 Controlled Variable: time of watering the plants, type of soil, type of seed

Materials:
Fertilizers, water, soil, seeds, ruler, pots
Procedures:
The procedures are listed in Practice Writing a Lab Report Activity. You do not need to include
them here.

Data and Observations:

Include the data for the sample lab here.
Height of Plant
Days No fertilizer Chemical Organic
(cm) Fertilizer (cm) Fertilizer (cm)
1 0 0 0
2 0 0 0
3 0 0 0
4 0 0 0
5 0 0.5 0
6 0 1.3 0
7 0 1.9 0.3
8 0 2.2 1.6
9 0 4.5 3.2
10 0.2 5.2 3.8
Conclusion:
Be sure to answer the following reflection questions as a summary in the conclusion of your lab
report:
 Was John’s hypothesis correct or incorrect? Why or why not?
Chemical fertilizers helped the plant grow to 5.2cm, org. fert. to 3.8cm and no fert. to
0.2cm. Thus by using the chemical fertilizer it grew better than with org. fert. or no fert.
It made the plant grow taller with the organic fertilizers, but not as tall as with the
chemical fertilizers. So he was correct because he only predicted “that the organic fertilizer
would make the plants grow taller”
 Using that data in the table which fertilizer worked the best? Explain your answer.
The one with the Chemicals. It had the most pro-growth additives, which some of them
could be only made using chemicals. Thus can’t be considered organic.
 Which plant did not grow well? Explain your answer.
The one without any fertilizers. Its only nutrients came form the soil, which doesn’t have
that many of them. Therefore it didn’t grow very well.

Questions:
1. How would you improve this experiment?
I would make the sunlight a controlled variable. Make an indoor simulated sun, which
would be kept at a constant temperature.
2. As a real-world application, how can this experiment be beneficial?
It can help someone choose the right type of a fertilizer for him + can help produce more
growth-efficient fertilizers.
