L – 9: FORCE AND PRESSURE

Month-April I-Definitions:
1. Contact force: A force that acts only when it is in contact with an object is
called contact force.
2. Pressure: The force exerted per unit area is called pressure.
3. Atmospheric pressure: The pressure exerted by the atmosphere on all objects is
called Atmospheric pressure.

II- Differentiate:
Magnetic Force Electrostatic Force
1.Magnetic force is applied by a magnet 1.Electrostatic force is applied by a
only on magnetic materials. charged body on another
charged body or uncharged body.
2.It involves two poles 2.It involves two types of charges
(North and South poles) (Positive and Negative
charges)
3.Opposite poles always attract each 3.Opposite charges always attract each
other and similar poles always repel each other and similar charges always repel
other. each other.

III-Answer the following questions: -

Q1. What two things fully describe a force?

Ans: A force can be described by stating its magnitude and the direction in which it acts.
(Note: Force is a vector quantity)

Q2. Why are caterpillar tracks used in battle tanks instead of tyres?

Ans: The battle tanks are very heavy hence we use broad chains called caterpillar
tracks which considerably increase the area of contact. This reduces the pressure
exerted on the tracks than if it had wheels. This prevents the tank from sinking in
terrain such as marshy land where the wheeled vehicles of the same weight would
sink.

IV-Give reasons: -
Q 1. Gravitational force is acting between you and building but still you are not pulled
by the building.

Reason: The magnitude of gravitational force depends on the masses of the two
objects and the distance between them. Since the masses of the building and our body
both are not as huge as Earth’s, we do not feel the impact of the gravitational pull on
each other. Earth pulls us towards itself with a force which is 30,00,00,00,000 times
more than the force with which the building pulls us.

Q 2. A spring balance is used to measure the weight but not a beam balance.

Reason: When we weigh an object using a spring balance, we actually measure the
Earth’s gravitational force on the object. And weight is a measure of the Earth’s
gravitational force on the object. A beam balance merely compares the mass of a
body with the known mass of a standard weight.

V-NUMERICALS
1. What would be the pressure applied by an object which is hitting the ground
with a force of 2.5 N and the area of contact with the ground is, 25cm X 5
cm.

Solution:
Given are

Force applied by the object on the ground = 2.5 N

Area of contact between the object and the ground= (25X5) square cm

To find => Pressure

Formula to be used=>

Pressure = Force/area of contact (N/m2)

First convert unit of area into m(metre)

Area= 125/10000 m2 = 0.0125 m2

Pressure= 2.5 N/0.0125 m2

Answer is = 200 Pa or pascal pressure is exerted by the object on ground.

2. Find the resultant force and final direction of movement of object B, if A applies
a force of 27N on B in Eastward direction and C applies a force of 27N on B in
Eastward direction?

Solution: Force applied by object A on B in Eastward direction (F1) =27 N

Force exerted by body C on B in Eastward direction (F2) = 27 N
Resultant or Net force on object B = F1+ F2= 27 N + 27 N= 54 N
Resultant direction of movement of object B is Eastward direction.

Homework-
1. Look at these pictures and comment on
what you can tell about liquid pressure.
2. Collect at least 10 images to show the effect of
force on anything and stick in your notebook
on the blank page. Also mention what is the
effect shown in each image.
3. A rubber or plastic suction hook sticks on the
smooth surfaces but not on rough surfaces. Give
reason.
4. Which one is better a needle or a knife, to stitch a cloth? Why? (HOTS)
5. Draw the diagram and write in short about a U-Tube Manometer.
