Access Information Using Computer

OBJECTIVES
At the end of this unit you should be able
to:
1. Define desktop icon.
2. Identify different desktop icons that is
commonly used.
3. Identify the different keyboard parts,
shortcut and finger placement.

Desktop Icons
 A Desktop icon is a symbol with text
under it that is displayed on the desktop.
 Desktop icons are designed to enable
quick access to frequently-used programs,
files, folders and so on. Many of these
icons will be shortcuts, which are used to
launch a program (or whatever) from
another location.
Can you name some examples
of a desktop icon?
Recycle Bin
1. Recycle Bin
In every version of Microsoft
Windows since Windows 95, the Recycle
Bin is an area where deleted files or folders
are temporarily saved. Users can retrieve
files that have been deleted in Windows by
using the Recycle Bin.
Microsoft Internet Explorer
2. Microsoft Internet Explorer
 Internet Explorer is a deprecated series of
graphical web browsers developed by
Microsoft that were used in the Windows
line of operating systems.
 A web browser called Internet Explorer (IE)
is included with the Microsoft Windows
operating system. Additionally, it is used to
access online banking, internet browsing,
internet marketing, streaming video, and
many other things. Microsoft first made it
available in 1995.
Folder
3. Folder
 A folder is a storage space, or container,
where many files can be placed into
groups and organize the computer.
 A folder can also contain other folders.
For many computer software applications,
there is a current working directory. This
is the folder that the application runs in.
My Computer / This PC
4. My Computer / This PC
 My Computer is a Microsoft Windows
feature first found in Windows 95 and
included with all later versions that allows us
to explore and manage the contents of our
computer drives.
 The “This PC” icon is a quick and
convenient way to access your computer‟s
drives, folders, and files. It is a shortcut to
your computer‟s most important directory
and can be found on the desktop of all
versions of Windows.
Control Panel
5. Control Panel
 Control Panel is a component of
Microsoft Windows that provides the
ability to view and change system settings.
It consists of a set of applets that include
adding or removing hardware and
software, controlling user accounts,
changing accessibility options, and
accessing networking settings.

Keyboarding Techniques
Keyboarding Skills
Keyboarding skills are set of skills
required to operate keyboard smoothly
while typing.
This includes understanding your
computer keyboard layout and its
functions.
It is a skill which is required whenever
you need to type.
Make sure to keep your arms at home
row, master that, then move on.
Keys on the computer keyboard
Alt Key
A computer key that you press together with another key so that the
other key does something different from what it usually does. You can
also refer to this key simply as Alt.
Arrow Key
One of four computer keys marked with an up, down, left, or right
arrow, used for moving the cursor.
Backspace
The key that you press on a keyboard to move one space backwards
in a document.

Tab
Computing a button on a computer keyboard or typewriter that you
press to move several spaces along the same line.
Caps Lock

A key on a computer keyboard that makes all the keys produce capital letters.

Character Set

A complete set of letters, numbers, or symbols that can be used by a computer.

Command Key

On some computers, a key that you press together with another key to make
the computer do a particular thing.

Control Key

A key on a computer keyboard that is used in combination with other keys for
doing particular operations. This key is usually marked „Ctrl‟. ctrl abbreviation
control: the control key on a computer keyboard.
Delete Key

A computer key that removes characters. This key is sometimes simply


referred to as del.

Enter Key

A key on a computer keyboard that makes the computer perform an


action or start a new line of writing.

Escape Key

A key on a computer keyboard that allows someone to stop an action,


leave a program, or return to a previous menu. This key is usually marked
„Esc‟.

Function Key

A special button on a computer keyboard that is used for a particular


operation in a program. The keys near the top of a keyboard marked „F1‟
to „F12‟ are function keys.
Numeric Keypad

The part of a computer keyboard to the right of the main keys


that has keys with numbers on them.

Num Lock

A computer key that you press to make the number keys below
it enter numbers and not be used for moving up and down a
document.

Shift Key

The key that you press on a computer keyboard when you want
to write a capital letter.

Space Bar
The long narrow bar at the front of a computer keyboard that
you press to make a space between words when you are typing.
KEYBOARD TECHNIQUES
Touch typing is a technique for you to type
documents quicker with accuracy using
your 10 fingers without looking at the
keyboard. In the home key position, your
fingers will rest at the middle part of the
keyboard.
KEYBOARD TECHNIQUES
Place your fingers on the home row keys:
1. Place your left hand fingers on the keys
ASDF
2. 2. Place your right hand finger on the
keys J K L ;
3. 3. Both of your thumbs should rest
lightly on the spacebar.
4. 4. Keep your wrists straight and slightly
curled your fingers.
Computer Ergonomics
 Addresses ways to optimize your
computer workstation to reduce specific
risks of computer vision syndrome (CVS),
neck and back pain, carpal tunnel
syndrome and other disorders affecting
the muscles, spine and joints.
