And of course, this unique integrated system environment can be even further extended
through the incorporation of ‘best in class’ applications from the rest of ABB, or 3rd parties
through the use of ABB’s patented Aspect Integrator Platform, and the IndustrialIT
certification process.

Transition from Products to a System
© 2004 ABB - 3
The System 800xA actually represents a paradigm shift in system thinking. We have moved
from an individual product approach to an integrated system approach. The system provides
complete DCS functionality by integrating components representing the various product
areas from the past. Each of these are individually developed and tested, but with a
complete system continuously in mind. On system level they are then integrated and verified
as a system component with a defined task as part of the complete system functionality.
From a software architecture perspective, the foundation of the 800xA system is the 800xA
Base Platform.
The extended functionality in the server and workplace layers is provided by software
components which we call Aspect Systems. Basic system functionality, such as the View
Handling and Navigation, as well as explicit product functionality, such as Operator Graphics
or History logging, is provided by Aspect Systems.
The Aspect Framework (Afw) supports with functionality that all products need, such as
supervision, diagnostics, security- and NLS management, etc., and it provides the object
management infrastructure needed for the integrated data- and information communication
between Aspect Systems, and between Aspect Systems and controllers, where the real time
process control is executed.
The basic system functionality is packaged together with those Aspect Systems which
provide common functionality to an extended system implementation, such as screen layout
and handling of the screen, and Aspect Object navigation, engineering, and information
management functions. The resulting functionality is represented by the base software
deliverable of the 800xA system.
Connection to process and discrete logic controllers is provided via connectivity server
software for the target controllers, or via other OPC servers.
